Paul Quincy (born May 22, 1944 in Mohrin / Neumark ; † November 27, 2013 ) was a German author and translator. He is known for his naval war novels about William Turner. Under his real name Uwe D. Minge , he has translated around 60 novels and non-fiction books from English. Under the pseudonym Ole Groothus he wrote the historical novels of the Peter and Paul Morin series.

Life

Paul Quincy grew up in West Berlin . After school, he went to sea as a Moses / cabin boy and, after the prescribed travel time, passed the sailor test on the training ship "Deutschland" . In his career as a seaman and later as a ship officer, he traveled the Caribbean, East Asia and North America, South America, West Africa and the Mediterranean.

After his time at sea, he became an expert on boats and yachts in the AKSV of the BWVS and a professional sailing instructor ( DSV ). At this time he began to translate marine history novels and non-fiction books with a maritime connection. Finally he publishes his own (marine) historical novels with his two series.

Paul Quincy lived near Berlin.

About the novels

Paul Quincy's novels are set in the so-called Age of Sail , the age of sailing ships and naval battles under sails.

Turner series

In 1775 there was peace in Europe, but England had to deal with insurgent colonists in America. The war slup Shark, under the command of a little lieutenant named William Turner, is sent to the region on a secret mission to carry out dangerous espionage missions. Turner comes from a humble background. The father is a fisherman and smuggler and the mother is the daughter of the local pastor. He learns to be a seaman and also receives a good education. This enables him to take up the profession of naval officer. But he has neither the wealth nor the connections to advance his career. The fact that he learned the seaman's trade from the bottom up not only makes him friends in the ranks of noble fellow officers.

In the course of the series of novels, Turner encounters a number of historical figures such as Steuben and Washington and also comes across pirates, among others.

The novels deal with the political and cultural background of the time of the American independence movement. The assessment of the story is made from the point of view of the lieutenant, who as a British officer of the 18th century naturally has a rather one-sided perception. Nevertheless, a good picture of the time is drawn.

Morin series

The series of novels takes place at the time of the Seven Years' War . The twin brothers Peter and Paul von Morin are cornetts with the Ziethenhusars , but have to flee from home and join a Dutch ship in Danzig. This is applied, the brothers are separated and live through the eventful time on opposite sides. One is forced into the British Navy while the other is placed with the French Marines.
