Dudley Pope
Dudley Bernard Egerton Pope (born December 29, 1925 in Ashford , Kent , England , † April 25, 1997 in Marigot ( Saint-Martin )) was a British writer of both maritime novels and historical textbooks . Best known is his series of novels about Lord Ramage .
Life
Pope was born in Ashfort, England, and joined the merchant navy with the rank of ensign at the age of 16 . Just one year later (1942) the ship on which he was serving was torpedoed and due to the injury he had suffered, he had to retire from service.
Pope soon worked for a small newspaper in Kent before starting in 1944 as a reporter on developments in the Navy for The Evening News in London .
He published his first book Flag 4 in 1954 and several other depictions of historical events followed. Cecil Scott Forester , the author of the well-known series of novels around Horatio Hornblower , encouraged Pope to make his literary work more fictional. Then in 1965 came Ramage , the first part of an 18-part marine history novel series.
His books have often been criticized because in them he often describes Spanish sailors as incompetent and stupid, which is, however, a prejudice because the Spanish navy of that time was one of the most successful in the world.
From 1953 he lived with his wife Kay - they married in 1954 - on sailboats , first on the 8-meter-long William Fife , which he called Concerto . From 1959 the couple lived in Porto Santo Stefano ( Italy ) on a 12 meter long ketch called Tokay . In 1963 they moved to a cutter called the Golden Dragon , on which they sailed to Barbados. In 1968 they moved to an 18 meter yacht , which was named Ramage and on which Pope wrote all the stories and works up to 1985. His travels and the impressions he gained influenced his books in a very strong way.
