The Gmünder Geschichtsverein e.V. was founded in 1964 and is dedicated to researching the history of the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd and its region. The association currently (2020) has around 250 full members and offers a varied program with lectures, publications, guided tours and excursions.

prehistory

Since the first publication of the journal Gmünder Heimatblätter by the local history study group in 1928, the establishment of a history and homeland association was repeatedly considered in Schwäbisch Gmünd, but not implemented. The people involved (in particular Franz Dietzel and Albert Deibele ) feared that the National Socialists would influence the content and therefore refrained from institutionalizing their working group, which offered an evening lecture and occasional excursions every month in the city archive or an inn. When Deibeles was transferred to Hellershof in 1942, the local history study group finally ceased its activities. Already at the end of 1937 the Gmünder Heimatblätter had to be discontinued when they finished their 10th year. The NSDAP revived this magazine as a new series , but after only seven more issues it had to be discontinued in the summer of 1939 due to the war .

After the end of the war, Franz Dietzel, city archivist Albert Deibele and Carl Wagenblast established the Federation for Local History on August 5, 1949 as permanent representatives of the city administration . This not only continued the activities of the local history working group , but also took over the tasks of the local history and tourist association. The magazine Unser Heimat , which appeared as a monthly supplement to the Neue Württembergische Zeitung from 1948 to 1949, served as the new communication organ . This local supplement was discontinued after only two years, and the Bund für Heimatkunde "fell asleep (...) after a short time quietly and peacefully without any actual agony."

Subsequently, Dietzel and Deibele re-published the Gmünder Heimatblätter , which appeared in the 12th year in 1950 and thus consciously linked to the pre-war traditions (the new series from 1939 was also counted as the 11th year). After Dietzel's death in 1957, the editorial team was transferred to Deibele, who edited the magazine as editor until its last issue in June 1966.

Foundation and goal setting

The Gmünder Geschichtsverein was founded on October 21, 1964 . It is not clear who the ultimate initiative to found the company came from: while Deibele claims it, the founding chairman, Gerhard Kolb, stated that Deibele should have resisted founding an association. In addition to Kolb, Albert Deibele was elected as deputy chairman, Carl Wagenblast as secretary and Albert Dangel as treasurer to the board, which consisted of five other assessors.

As early as November 16, 1964, the board of the newly founded association addressed itself in an appeal to the population and invited them to participate. In addition to researching the history of the town and country of the Schwäbisch Gmünd district, the association's goals were also to preserve valuable cultural monuments and appealing townscapes. Lectures, publications and guided tours were intended to arouse interest in Schwäbisch Gmünd's past and the surrounding area. Every full member receives an annual publication as an annual gift to this day. As a club newspaper, 48 issues of the Gmünder Geschichtsblätter were published between 1981 and 1992 and appeared as a supplement to the Gmünder Tagespost .

In addition to the association's traditionally close ties to the city archive, the monthly lecture series is organized in cooperation with the VHS Schwäbisch Gmünd . In addition, joint events with the Gmünder Museumsverein eV and the working group Alt-Gmünd eV are regularly offered. During the Whitsun holidays, multi-day excursions to historical and artistic destinations in Germany and Europe have been taking place since 1992.
