Gary Kurtz (* 27. July 1940 in Los Angeles , California ; † 23. September 2018 in London , England ) was an American film producer , who as a producer of the first two Star Wars movies Star Wars and Back The Empire Strikes got known.

He has produced three films in collaboration with George Lucas : American Graffiti (1973), Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Since George Lucas and Gary Kurtz fell out after the second Star Wars film, they parted ways from then on. After that, Gary Kurtz continued to enjoy success with the following films: The Dark Crystal (1982), Slipstream (1989), and An Honorable Theft (1994).

In 2005 Kurtz produced the short film 5-25-77 . The title of the film stands for the release date of the first Star Wars film in the United States in 1977. The story of the film revolves around the events of this period, and it is not a documentary film. After over ten years of production, the film was finally released in 2017.

Kurtz died in September 2018 as a result of cancer.
