Doug Chiang

Doug Chiang (born February 16, 1962 in Taipei , Taiwan ) is an American VFX Supervisor , who received the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects in 1993 for Death suits her well .

Life

In 1968 he and his family immigrated to the USA, first to Dearborn , Michigan , and later to Westland , a suburb of Detroit . He graduated from John Glenn High School in 1981 and began studying industrial design at the College of Art and Design in Detroit. In 1982 he moved to California to study film at the University of California in Los Angeles . After completing his studies, he worked as a designer for digital productions from 1986 . After the company closed in 1987, he moved to Rhythm and Hues , where he directed several computer-animated commercials.

In 1989 he left Rhythm and Hues to work for Universal Pictures as a concept designer on Back to the Future II . After working on the film, he joined Industrial Light and Magic as the visual effects artistic director . In the years that followed, he worked in visual effects on films such as Ghost - Message from Sam , Terminator 2 - Judgment Day, and Death Suits Her , for which he received the 1993 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects . In the same year he was promoted to Artistic Director at Industrial Light and Magic . In his new role, he has worked on films such as Forrest Gump , Jumanji and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace . In 2004 he co-founded Ice Blink Studios and worked for Robert Zemeckis on The Legend of Beowulf .
