Binny and the spirit is a German youth - crime drama with fantasy and comedy -elements of the Walt Disney Company , which by UFA Fiction was produced. The idea for the series came from Steffi Ackermann and the author Vivien Hoppe. The pilot episode was broadcast as a preview on March 23, 2013 on the Disney Channel (then still on pay TV ). The regular broadcast began on October 26, 2014 on free TV . In January 2015, the Disney Channel gave the go-ahead for the production of a final second season, which premiered on April 10, 2016.

13-year-old Binny moves from Hamburg to Berlin with her parents in an ancient villa. There she then finds out that her room is already inhabited by a 14-year-old ghost named Melchior. However, he does not know why he has been a ghost for over a hundred years. Melchior doesn't know the 21st century and Binny doesn't understand Melchior, who was born in 1900. Finally, in order to get rid of the ghost that has completely messed up her life, Binny decides to help Melchior unravel the mystery of his past. Only in this way can Melchior be freed from his spiritual life. The two teenagers are often involved in dangerous situations and have to solve crimes together.

Binny Baumann is the courageous, clever and curious protagonist of the series. She loves to solve puzzles, so she decides to help Melchior find out about his past. Binny is in possession of Melchior's pocket watch, with which she can see into the spirit world. Binny is also very environmentally conscious and criticizes pollution and injustice.

Melchior von und zu Panke is a charming, self-amorous ghost who was born on February 10, 1900 and has not aged since 1914. After realizing that Binny can see him, he asks her to help him learn more about his past. Despite initial difficulties working with Binny, Melchior still seems jealous when other guys flirt with her. Melchior is also cosmopolitan and therefore enthusiastic about the modern technology of the 21st century.

Wanda Baumann is the loving and caring mother of Binny. She is optimistic and tries to pass this positive energy on to her family. Wanda works as a restorer in a museum. Like her daughter, she speaks out against pollution and injustice.

Ronald Baumann is Binny's clumsy and humorous father. He works as a professional architect and constantly has to make changes to his family's home. He's also a soccer fanatic. Like his wife and daughter, he despises pollution and injustice.

Luca Schuster is Binny's best friend. The two friends spend a lot of time together, but Luca has no idea of ​​the secret of Binny and Melchior.

Hubertus van Horas is the opponent of Binny and Melchior. His goal is to rule the world, but to do this he must be in possession of all pocket watches. He will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. His last name comes from Latin and means time.

Bodo is Hubertus' assistant. He seems loyal to Hubertus as he supports him in his devious plans. He is often mistaken for being stupid. However, Bodo pursues his own goals that Hubertus has no idea of.

development

After the minds behind the German Disney Channel were able to convince the US parent company Disney to produce their own series, a concept for the series was sought. The production company UFA Fiction (until August 2013 still teamWorx ) had prevailed with its concept under the working title "Binny and the Spirit" in a pitch against other production companies. The idea for the series came from UFA fiction producer Steffi Ackermann and the author Vivien Hoppe. The casting of the actors is carried out by Daniela Tolkien. On November 8, 2012, the production of a pilot episode of Binny and the Ghost was confirmed.

Filming

On November 9, 2012 in Berlin and the surrounding area, filming began on the pilot episode and later on the first season of Binny and the Spirit . The villa, which serves as a set for the Baumann family's "ghost villa", is on Feuerbachstrasse in Potsdam-West . Due to the success of the pilot episode with the audience, the German Disney Channel ordered twelve more episodes of around 22 minutes in length for the first season in the spring of 2013, so that the first season has 13 episodes. The pilot episode was a purely German commissioned production; From episode 2 onwards, various local Disney channels from Europe, the Middle East and Africa joined as co-clients. The shooting of the first season lasted until autumn 2014. One of the reasons for the long shooting is that the main actors could only be shot during the school holidays. Filming for the second season began on March 13, 2015 and ended in early November 2015. Among other things, the film was shot in the zoo on the Reilsberg in Halle.

Trivia

• In the eighth episode of the first season, a horse is named Maximus, this is a reference to the horse Maximus from the Disney film Rapunzel . Both horses have the same fearless and courageous personality but differ in coat color.
• The episode "Das Schwarze Froschmonster" was also shot in the Halle (Saale) mountain zoo. Famous backdrops were the Humboldt penguin enclosure, the predator house as well as the seal enclosure and the squirrel monkey tunnel near the zoo entrance.
