Pocahontas 2 - The journey into a new world (original title: Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World ) from 1998 is the sequel to the cartoon Pocahontas of the Walt Disney studios and was released exclusively for the video market. The film was produced by DisneyToon Studios and was nominated for the 1999 Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Home Video Production .

The film was inspired by real events in the life of Pocahontas , daughter of Indian chief Powhatan - Sachem . While the first part describes her romance with John Smith , the second part deals with the love story between her and the Englishman John Rolfe , whom she later married in real life.

action

Instead of her father, Pocahontas travels to London as an ambassador for her tribe to secure peace between whites and Indians. In addition, on his return, Governor Ratcliffe plotted against Smith, who has now disappeared.

She comes into conflict with the English royal family. When Smith stands before her alive again at the end, she realizes that she feels more for Rolfe. She tells Smith that they once went together, but now she wants someone else and together with Rolfe she returns to her village.

background

authenticity

In the second part, Disney mostly stuck to the authentic life story of the Indian Pocahontas. Pocahontas lived in Virginia from 1595 to 1617 and was considered a mediator between her Indian tribe and the colonists. The chief's daughter came to England to represent her father. How, that is not definitely clear. What is certain is that she saved the life of the navigator John Smith. But it is not known whether she traveled to England with him or as the wife of another Briton.

Pocahontas as baptized "Rebecca Rolfes", 1616

In England Pocahontas, who was baptized during the long voyage and was given the name Princess Rebecca, was received at court. It is said that her lovely appearance and her lively manner (Pocahontas means something like "the playful one") opened her doors to the aristocracy and English society. Pocahontas died shortly after returning home, presumably of illness. Others claim that lovesickness was her death.

criticism

“Sequel to a cartoon from 1994 that is fairly light-hearted with history and focuses entirely on Disney-style family entertainment. Since the representation of violence is kept within responsible limits, the film can also be expected of smaller children. "
