Jacqueline "Jackie" Burroughs (born February 2, 1939 in Lancashire , England , † September 22, 2010 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a British - Canadian film and theater actress .

Life

Jackie Burroughs spent the first twelve years of her life in England before moving to Canada with her parents and brother Gary in 1951. Here she graduated from the University of Toronto in 1962 . She gained her first experience as an actress at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Stratford . Burroughs was not only a trained actress but also a dancer. In the early 1960s she married the musician Zal Yanovsky , with whom she lived in New York City , among other places . The marriage, which was divorced in 1968, resulted in Burroughs' only child, daughter Zoe. After the divorce from Yanovsky, Burroughs returned to Canada. She also had a second home in Oaxaca ( Mexico ).

In 1966 she first appeared in front of the camera in the short film Notes for a Film About Donna & Gail . Although she then appeared in over 100 films and TV series in front of the camera, she was hardly known internationally. From 1989 to 1996 she played a leading role on the side of Sarah Polley in the television series The City Girl ; through them, Burroughs was temporarily known in German-speaking countries. Another film that became known nationwide was The Sentinel - Whom Can You Trust? , which was produced in 2006 and starred Burroughs in a small role.

In 1987, she ventured a digression and directed the film drama breathe with the heart I directed at its screenplay . Since she was also seen in one of the leading roles, she was awarded the Genie Award in the same year .

Burroughs was nominated a total of eight times for the Gemini Award and was honored four times with the most important Canadian television award. She also won three Genie Awards , also with eight nominations, and was also nominated for the Satellite Award in 1999.

In 2005, Burroughs received the Governor General's Award from Governor General Michaëlle Jean .

Jackie Burroughs died of gastric cancer at the age of 71 .
