action

Walter is the chief of police in a small town in the Canadian province of Ontario . Suddenly there is a murder case to be solved there: A beautiful young woman was found naked on the shores of the nearby lake. Nobody knows the dead woman, and Walter tries to help the criminal investigator Washington from London who is taking over the case with full commitment. In addition, he has to deal with his mood swings, because behind him lies a time in which he was a feared thug, but which he believes overcome with the help of a local Mennonite clergyman .

Through the voice analysis of the anonymous emergency call received by the local police, which points to the body, two of the officers, including Walter, recognize Rita's voice. A prime suspect, Steve, is quickly found, but his girlfriend Rita gives him an alibi. Walter gets into a quandary, because he and Rita had a common past, which is not hidden from the investigating officer Washington. He suspends Walter from the case. When it turns out that the alibi is wrong, because Steve was not with Rita before the time of the crime, but temporarily in a distant amusement club, where he could have met the later victim, who worked there as a dancer, and she could have met her while giving her testimony lied, Walter faces a difficult decision. He provokes both of them for so long, also becoming violent again, until Rita revokes her statement and Steve is arrested.

background

Small Town Murder Songs was filmed on Lake Conestogo in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo , Listowel and Palmerston , Ontario.

Christian motifs with repeated quotes from the Bible and the music play a major role in the film, whereby the music also takes up Christian motifs and is often reminiscent of religious choirs. The Evangelical Press Service notes the role of music: "[...] a multi-layered film: moral image, character study, music video and crime thriller at the same time". It comes mainly from the band Bruce Peninsula , but also from Mark Revell , Diane Warren , Henegar Union Sacred Harp Convention , Damian Criswell ; the song "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is performed as the original sound by the Mennonite community.

publication

In March 2011, it was announced that Monterey Media had acquired the rights to the film in the United States. It premiered on May 26, 2011 at the O-Cinema in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami , Florida .

The DVD was released in the USA by Monterey Media on July 19, 2011. The German theatrical release was on June 28, 2012, before it was released on DVD on November 16, 2012 in English with German subtitles.

reception

The film received mostly positive reviews.

“The muffled drums of an ominous, past deed sound too loud for small-town policeman Walter to banish them from his mind. Law enforcement officers who quarreled with themselves have often been told - from the Catholic strictness of Abel Ferrara ('Bad Lieutenant') to the psychological differentiation of Christopher Nolan ('Insomnia - sleepless') to the violent criminal portrait of an Oren Moverman ('Rampart') ). Director Ed Gass-Donnelly ('This Beautiful City') actually knows how to gain new aspects from the well-known subject in 'Small Town Murder Songs'. The drama, dominated by a driving folk soundtrack, proves to be a grounded character study of a broken man in deeply religious Ontario. "

"STMS is a successful piece of creepy Ontario mood (original: 'STMS succeeds as an Ontario Gothic mood piece' )."
