mokant.at is an independent Austrian online magazine . It went online in March 2010. The predecessor magazine of mokant.at was CHiLLi.cc .

Articles appear several times a week on the subjects of politics, society, culture and music. When reporting, special attention is paid to niche topics. Other focal points of mokant.at are the training of young journalists and the promotion of young bands.

The editorial team consists of around 25 employees. The editor-in-chief and publisher is Sofia Khomenko. The media owner is CHiLLi - Association for Free and Independent Media.

Content and editorial policy

mokant.at is primarily aimed at young people between 16 and 35 who are interested in politics and culture.

According to the magazine's own presentation, on the one hand the focus is on niche topics, on the other hand mokant.at aims to shed light on prominent topics from new perspectives.

For example, mokant.at was one of the few media outlets to publish a detailed interview with one of the defendants at the time, Chris Moser, during the controversial "animal rights activist trial" in 2011. In addition, mokant.at was the only Austrian medium to conduct an interview with the Russian punk band Pussy Riot , which subsequently appeared in the press in the Austrian daily newspaper .

Other prominent interview partners included Sebastian Kurz , Heinz-Christian Strache , Felix Gottwald and Hermann Nitsch .

history

mokant.at was founded in March 2010 as the successor to CHiLLi.cc by Michaela Wein , Julia Staller , Stefan Hohenwarter and Christian Eder . The editors-in-chief were initially Michaela Wein and Stefan Hohenwarter, later Michaela Wein and Julia Staller. In December 2011, Sofia Khomenko was elected editor-in-chief.

Since its founding, mokant.at has also seen itself as a training medium, young journalists are offered well-founded training in the areas of research, writing style, interviewing or image processing and also the opportunity to put what they have learned into practice. In terms of promoting youth and young talent journalism, mokant.at works with the youth press and the European Youth Press , among others .

There has also been a partnership with the Swiss online magazine tink.ch since autumn 2012 .

A cooperation with the music channel VIVA has also been running since autumn 2012 . In the course of this collaboration, mokant.at conducted interviews with the protagonists of the VIVA program VIVA 180 Degrees , which were also published on the VIVA website.

Since 2013, mokant.at has also been appearing as a concert organizer and thus offering a stage for up-and-coming Austrian bands.

mokant.at Academy

A project started in 2014 is the mokant.at Academy. This is an affordable and practical training opportunity for (young) journalists. Workshops on topics such as research, writing style or interviewing are offered over several days. The workshops are carried out by the mokant.at editorial team and prominent guest speakers from quality Austrian newspapers. The cooperation partners of the mokant.at Academy are the Association of Austrian Newspapers , the IG Publizistik and the youth press .
