The Lazarus Effect is an American science fiction - Thriller by David Gelb from the year 2015 with Mark Duplass , Olivia Wilde , Donald Glover , Evan Peters and Sarah Bolger . The film premiered in the United States on February 27, 2015.

action

Medical researcher Frank and Zoe, his fiancée, developed a serum code-named Lazarus . It was originally intended to help coma patients, but it is actually capable of bringing the dead back to life.

With the support of their friends Niko, Clay and the videographer Eva, the two conduct a successful experiment on a recently deceased dog. It is noticeable, however, that the dog behaves differently than before his death - his cataract disappears, he loses his appetite and demonstrates other skills. Tests show that the serum created strange new synapses in the dog's brain.

When the dean of the university learns of the unapproved experiments, the project is shut down. Frank and Zoe are also informed that a large pharmaceutical company has bought the company that funded their research. The company and its lawyers confiscate everything connected with the project.

Frank and his team sneak back into their lab to duplicate the experiment so they can prove they made the serum. During this attempt, things go wrong and Zoe is electrocuted. Not ready to let her go, Frank uses the serum to revive her. At first the process turns out to be a success, but the team soon realizes that Zoe has changed. She claims that she experienced her version of hell when she died. This originated from a childhood nightmare. As a child, Zoe lived in an apartment in a building that caught fire. She saw her neighbors burn. This became a recurring nightmare. Zoe also begins to demonstrate unusual mental abilities. Under the influence of the Lazarus serum, her brain develops incredibly quickly, so Zoe has mastered superhuman powers such as telekinesis and telepathy .

The serum also causes increased aggressiveness with terrifying consequences. Niko goes into a room and is surprised by Zoe. After he refuses to kiss her, she uses telekinesis to throw him in a closet and kill him there. When Clay asks to know where Niko is, she also kills him by suffocating with an e-cigarette. Frank prepares fatal injections together with Eva as a countermeasure and, leaving Eva behind, goes in search of Zoe. But Zoe murders Frank after she telepathically explored his true thoughts and intentions when asked if he still loved her. Then Zoe injects herself a large dose of the Lazarus serum, which makes her skills even stronger.

With her newly awakened abilities, she takes power in the entire laboratory environment and switches off all electricity and thus the lighting. Eva, who is still alive, searches for Zoe in the dark with a hand lamp. They both eventually meet and Zoe sends her to the hell she went to when she died. Inside the nightmare, it becomes apparent that it was the childlike Zoe who started the fire in the building. Eva apparently wakes up and injects the Zoe opposite her with the poison with a syringe. Zoe dies and rescue is near, but this is obviously an illusion and the still alive Zoe kills Eva. In a final experiment, she then injects Frank with her own blood (with the Lazarus serum) in an attempt to bring him back from the dead. It is implied that he will also awaken as a monster.
