action

Alexander Cooper lives in the suburbs with his parents Ben and Kelly as well as his big brother Anthony, older sister Emily and little brother Trevor. Ben Cooper is currently unemployed taking care of the baby Trevor. His wife Kelly Cooper works in the children's book division of a publishing company.

Alexander Cooper is planning his 12th birthday party the next day, but is devastated to learn that the coolest boy in school, Philip Parker, is planning to throw a much bigger birthday party on the same day. Alexander therefore fears that none of his school friends will come to his party. Things are not going very well for Alexander at school either. At first he doesn't get the lecture he wanted on Australia, then he accidentally burns Becky's notes in chemistry class and his father comes to pick him up from school far too late. For the rest of his family, however, things are going really well. In his desperation, as he blows out the candles on his improvised birthday cake , Alexander wishes that his family would have a terrible day too.

The next day begins in a mess for the family, everyone overslept. Emily has a total cold so that her theater appearance is in danger, Anthony's friend Celia breaks up with him, Kelly is late for work and has to discover that a fatal misprint has crept in while printing a new children's book.

It's only going better for Alexander. His competitor Philip has chickenpox and has to cancel his big birthday party. As a result, his school friends now come to Alexander's party. Alexander even manages to invite his crush Becky to his party.

Anthony is reconciled with Celia, but accidentally destroys the showcase with the trophies at school and is suspended for it. Because Anthony uses his mobile phone during his driving test, he demolishes the car and of course fails the test. When there was a big argument and blame between the family members, Alexander confessed that he believed he had cursed Family Day with his wish. However, his father Ben doesn't believe him and the family tries to make the most of the rest of the day with positive thinking.

Emily arrives in time for her theatrical performance, but since she has drank too much cough syrup in the meantime, she is not completely with herself and the performance becomes a disaster. Dinner with a potential new employer goes well for Ben at first, but then his shirt accidentally catches fire, which Ben is able to put out.

The family finally realizes that the day is just bad. However, they are all happy to be together. Anthony even cancels his appointment with Celia for the school ball for that evening. When the family comes home, the Australian petting zoo with crocodile and kangaroo, organized as a birthday surprise for the party, is already there. The party will be a great success and the day will be saved.
