Redbone is a song by the American musician Childish Gambino (musical stage name of actor Donald Glover). It was released on November 17th, 2016 and is the second single from his third studio album "Awaken, My Love!" . The song was nominated for three Grammys , including Record of the Year at the 2018 Grammy Awards , and ultimately won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance .
Recording and production
Redbone was written, written and produced by Donald Glover and Ludwig Göransson , with whom he has worked since his mixtape Culdesac (2010). The basis for the song, a drum - beat of Glover and influences of Afro-American funk band Funkadelic . Based on this, Glover and Goransson tried out other instruments; in the end, an electric bass , percussion and a glockenspiel were used for Redbone . While recording the album, Glover played an early version of Redbones in a hair salon from his cell phone. The staff liked the beginning, but Glover was not satisfied with the middle section and returned to the recording studio and reworked the song. In an interview with Australian radio station Triple J , Glover said:
"I think people hear 'Redbone' and are like 'oh, he pitched up his vocals', but there was no vocal pitching on the album - I just sang differently."

Following the release of the first single, Me and Your Mama , Redbone was first played publicly on Annie Mac's Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1 on November 17, 2016 . There was no physical publication. In December 2016, shortly after the album was released, Childish Gambino played the song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon .

Reviews
Pitchfork's Sheldon Pearce described Redbone as "a full-blown funk slow jam that contains love, lust, reconciliation, generations of black soul and mindfulness." For the New York Times , Jon Pareles wrote that the song was one of "Paranoia and fear-riddled fistula ballad that balances between plush vocal group soul and synthesizer subversion. "
Commercial win
A surprise hit in the United States, Redbone debuted at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 10, 2016 . The song returned to the charts and reached number 12 in the week of August 19, 2017. By This Is America chart entry , it was Gambino's top-ranked single and his first top 20 single. The song also became Childish Gambino's first number one single on the adult R&B charts . Redbone had been streamed over 16 million times as of June 2017 .
Awards
Redbone won the 2018 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance and was nominated for Record of the Year and Best R&B Song .
In other media
The song is used in the satirical mystery horror thriller Get Out (2017) by Jordan Peele during the opening scene and the credits , which had a huge impact on the song's chart success.
Since re-entering the Billboard charts, the song has become an internet meme made up of various remixes of the song that fit a specific theme. During a concert in June 2017, Glover referred to the meme before performing the song.
