Wishart McLea Robertson

Wishart McLea Robertson PC (born February 15, 1891 in Passage , Nova Scotia , † August 16, 1967 ) was a Canadian Liberal Party politician who was a member of the Senate for almost 23 years and a minister in the 16th Canadian cabinet of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and in the 17th cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent . From 1953 to 1957 he was President of the Upper House of the Parliament of Canada as Speaker of the Senate .

Life

Robertson was the son of Thomas Robertson , who from 1878 to 1887 a member of the lower house was made and during the First World War, 1916 to 1918 his military service as a lieutenant in the 85th and the 219th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force .

After the war he worked as an entrepreneur and was elected on October 1, 1928 as a candidate for the Nova Scotia Liberal Party as a member of the House of Representatives of Nova Scotia , in which he represented the Shelburne constituency until August 21, 1933 .

Robertson, who was President of the Liberal Party of Canada from January 1, 1943, succeeding Norman Alexander McLarty until his replacement by Gordon Fogo on January 1, 1945, became a member of the Senate on February 19, 1943 at the suggestion of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie Appointed by Canada and represented the Senate District of Shelburne for almost 23 years until he voluntarily waived his mandate on December 24, 1965 .

During his long tenure in the Senate, Robertson served as the leader of the government in the Senate from August 24, 1945 to October 13, 1953, and was thus virtually chairman of the Liberal Party faction . At the same time he held an office as Minister without Portfolio in the 16th Cabinet of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and in the subsequent 17th Cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Saint-Laurent during this period from September 4, 1945 to October 13, 1953 .

On October 14, 1953, Robertson succeeded Elie Beauregard as Speaker of the Senate, President of the Upper House of Parliament of Canada and held this office until his replacement by Mark Robert Drouin on October 3, 1957. As Senate Speaker, he was also from November 12 1953 to April 12, 1957 by virtue of office co-chair of the standing joint committee for the library as well as for the restaurant of the parliament.
