Gercüş ( Kurdish Kercews ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Batman . The city is home to about 30% of the district's population. The population consists of Kurds and Turks .

Until 1926, the city of Gercüş was in the Midyat County in the Mardin Province . In 1926, a new district with the capital Gercüş was established in Mardin. In 1990, Law 3647 established the Batman Province and added Gercüş to this province.

The district has 22 inhabitants per square kilometer the lowest population density of the province. In addition to the district town ( Merkez ), it also consists of the small town of Kayapınar (2,319 inhabitants) and 58 villages ( Köy ), none of which has more than 623 inhabitants. The average population per village is 206 people. Most of the villages live in Kurds , and Kayapınar and Yenice Mhallami are also at home.
