Location of the municipality | |
Zuchwil (in the local dialect Zuchu ) is a municipality in the Wasseramt district in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .
Zuchwil is a suburb of the city of Solothurn and the fourth largest municipality in the canton in terms of population after Solothurn, Olten and Grenchen. With 9082 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) it is the largest municipality in the Wasseramt district, with a rather below-average area of 4.67 km². With 40.8 percent foreign nationals (2011), Zuchwil has the highest proportion of foreigners in the canton of Solothurn and one of the highest in Switzerland.
geography
The neighboring communities of Zuchwils are Luterbach , Derendingen , Biberist , Feldbrunnen-St. Niklaus , Riedholz and the city of Solothurn . The Aare forms a natural border to the north to Solothurn, Feldbrunnen-St. Niklaus and Riedholz, while the course of the Emme corresponds to the eastern border to Luterbach and Derendingen. Zuchwil's furthest north is the confluence of the Emme and the Aare at the so-called Emmenspitz . The southern border of Biberist form largely of Birchi - and Dittiberg -Forest , depending on its south side. To the west of the same municipality, the RBS railway line and more important streets play the main role, which suggests that this latter demarcation is not very old. The relatively short border section to Solothurn, on the other hand, is much older: the tracks of the new Solothurn main station were moved over to the Zuchwil municipality in 1886. The border there seems to have existed for centuries, as a result of the separation of grazing and arable rights between Solothurn and Zuchwil farmers.

Community meetings
The regular community meetings take place twice a year in June / July and December. During the last ten years there was only one extraordinary community meeting when a vote was taken in January 2009 on a replacement supporting structure and a new roof for the ice rink at the Zuchwil sports center. The community meeting usually takes place in the gym of the Pisoni school house.
The municipal assembly of October 25, 1966 in particular made headlines in the canton for several years. The "Mitteles Blumenfeld" development plan approved at this municipal assembly was refused by the cantonal government council. In 1967, the government council was granted justice by the Federal Supreme Court , as it was based on the law and allowed to restrict communal autonomy to a reasonable extent.

traffic
Since 1971, next to the Birchi-Center , there has been a motorway connection in Zuchwil, which for around three decades formed the end of the A5 section between Zuchwil and the Luterbach junction on the A1 . This section therefore initially served as a feeder road for traffic to and from Solothurn. From the motorway exit, the traffic on Luzernstrasse was directed over a bridge to Solothurn, so that the village center was spared from transit traffic. After the opening of the motorway section between Zuchwil and Lengnau on May 31, 2001 and the motorway connections from Solothurn, transit traffic through the city decreased.
Zuchwil local transport is guaranteed by four bus routes from Busbetrieb Solothurn und Umgebung ( BSU ), which serve twelve bus stops.
Regional trains ran from Solothurn to Herzogenbuchsee until 1991, then bus lines 5 and 7. The first train stop after Solothurn was Scintilla, a train stop only for factory employees where the trains only stopped at certain times.

Zuchwil used to have its own Scintilla station on the Solothurn – Herzogenbuchsee railway line . When this line was closed, the station was demolished. Today the track is in use again for the upgraded Solothurn – Wanzwil line . Furthermore, two tracks of the Jura foot line and one track of the regional traffic Bern-Solothurn run through Zuchwil.
Regional infrastructure facilities
There are many infrastructure facilities of regional importance in Zuchwil, for example the wastewater treatment and waste incineration plants on the Emmenspitz , the gas storage facility in the Aarmatt and the BSU garage in the Waldegg industrial park .
history
- Bronze Age (around 1000 BC) - metal finds from a settlement in what is now Emmenschachen
- Older Iron Age ( Hallstatt Period ) - A settlement exists on the edge of Birchi, on what is now the upper Bühlstrasse. There is a fortification in the Birchiwald.
- Younger Iron Age ( La Tène Period ) - A sword was found in northern Emmenschachen, near a defensive fortification.
- Roman times (58 BC – 400 AD) - A Roman road runs from Bucheggberg and Solothurn eastwards through Zuchwil. At the site of the current Catholic Church, there is a Villa Rustica with a 44 m long main building. The farm is in a street village with at least four other villas. Many of the villagers are probably merchants and veterans from the vicus in Solothurn.
- Migration period (400–700) - After the retreat of the Romans, the Romanized but Germanic Burgundians occupied the area. From this time there are graves with graves in the current Catholic Church. Later the Alemanni took possession of the area. In order to better protect themselves against military attacks, they fortified the Birchi hill (Alemannic for "protected place").
- approx. 1000 - Zuchwil was mentioned for the first time in those files of the clerical Solothurn St. Ursenstift that have been preserved. The monastery had the manorial rule over the tenant farming families living here. The name means at the homestead of the Zucho . At that time the village still belonged to Hochburgund , not to Solothurn.
- 1454 - The first bridge over the Emme was built. Before there was only one jetty; Carts had to cross the river.
- 1850 - years of famine broke out - not for the first time, but here again, even after the liberals overthrew the aristocratic regiment in the canton in 1830.
- 1871 - The first taxes were collected after the modern municipality form had been introduced today. In earlier times, people had to do slave labor and pay tithes and interest to the St. Ursen monastery mentioned above .
- 1875 - The Solothurn Actienbrauerei built a brewery on Rainstrasse in Zuchwil. In 1907, 20 people worked there. The brewery was closed in 1922.
- 1885 - Several buildings fall victim to a major fire. Nevertheless, the old village center southeast of Martins Church is still relatively easy to recognize today, with individual timber-framed houses and other older houses, e.g. B. with year of construction 1845
- In 1900 Zuchwil had 1,100 inhabitants, making it only the fourth largest village in the Wasseramt (the largest at that time was Derendingen). Only then did industry settle in, which was attracted by a restrictive land policy adopted by the electorate in Solothurn and the proximity to the train station.
- 1939 - "The Men of Zuchwil" - a resolution against National Socialist activities in the village was passed.
- 1939–1945 - The Zuchwil weapons factory on today's Sultex site supplied only Hitler's Germany and Mussolini-Italy with weapons and equipment during World War II due to German participation in the company and the prevailing geopolitical pressure, and was thus placed on the Allies' black list . It was also marked as one of the top priority targets in a German plan of attack on Switzerland. After the war, the Sulzer company and its textile machinery division settled on this area until production was transferred to Italian hands under the name Sultex in the 1990s. Today the area is called Riverside Business Park. The renowned Mausefalle Solothurn small theater has been stationed there since 2012 .
coat of arms
- A yellow crescent moon lying in blue over a green three-mountain , raised by a yellow five-pointed star
A green three-mountain, yellow crescent and three yellow stars were already worked on a male choir flag around 1870. Later church choir and rifle flags show similar motifs. The municipal coat of arms was established in 1940. The Dreiberg is reminiscent of the range of hills from Dittiberg, Bleichenberg and Birchi.

St. Martin's Churches
Former churches
The building site and the patronymic icon of St. Martin indicate that a chapel stood on the site of the current Catholic church as early as the 7th century.
- From the oldest chapel, only the altar was found during an excavation in 1955.
- In the early Middle Ages, a chapel with a meter-wide altar, a semicircular choir three meters wide and a rectangular nave was built on it.
- In 1581 , what was probably the third St. Martin's Church in Gothic style followed , which only received its elders in 1740 . At his own request, the architect Paolo Antonio Pisoni was buried here. As the church became too small with the growing population, it was torn down in 1953.
Catholic Church
The new St. Martin Church , consecrated on July 15, 1956, was built according to plans by Hermann Baur .
At the entrance there are reliefs with biblical animal motifs by Albert Schilling . In the spacious interior, the abstract choir wall painted in translucent colors by Roman Candio in 1971 and the central altar are striking. Three small glass windows provide a colored accent. In the modern cult room there is also art from the old church, such as a replica of the Hermit Madonna . Other objects from the old church are on display next to the entrance.
reformed Church
The reformed church Zuchwil stands on the northwest slope of the Birchi hill. The theologian Marie Speiser had looked after Zuchwil as parish vicar from Derendingen since 1934 . When the church was consecrated in 1942, she became its first female pastor. She was one of the first theologians to hold a full parish office in Switzerland.
As the only municipality besides Derendingen, Zuchwil forms an independent parish of the parish Wasseramt, to which no other municipalities are affiliated.
New Apostolic Church
The first New Apostolic Church in Zuchwil was consecrated on Prayer Day in 1933. After 17 months of construction and costs of 3.7 million francs, today's New Apostolic Church was inaugurated on August 14, 2005. The building, which represents two clasping hands, received the Swiss architecture award "Bronzener Hase" from the Hochparterre magazine in 2005 .

Sports
The sports center in Zuchwil offers a wide range of options for doing sports. At the same time there are occasional sports events, e.g. B. Ice hockey matches (occasionally even international matches with the national team). The Widi sports field with further football fields and tennis courts is located near the sports center . Between the sports center and the Widi sports field is a small forest with an 800 m long Finnish track . Also popular with joggers is the "Aare run" on both sides of the river between the Emmenspitz and the so-called red bike bridge . The Derendinger Abendlauf takes place annually, a large part of which runs through Zuchwil and through the forest of the Dittiberg. The 2.5 km long route of the Vitaparcours is located within this forest . In addition, there is the Solothurn / Zuchwil shooting range in Zuchwil and a facility for Hornussen with its association, the Hornussergesellschaft Zuchwil.
