history

In 1892 Maurice Schaerer founded a factory for medical and hospital supplies in Bern . In the years that followed, the company, which manufactured sanitary ware, surgical tools, and operating tables, quickly grew into a well-respected company with branches abroad. In 1919 the company began building “breakfast machines”, the coffee machines for hospital use.

Within the next twenty years, the company was able to expand its range and offered the catering trade a wide range of models, ranging from cafes to grand hotels.

In 1957, the company launched the first coffee machine with a fully automatic hydraulic piston system. In 1967 the dosing device for coffee was automated and two years later the first fully automatic machine with an integrated coffee grinder was built .

In 1984 production of the “Schaerer Matic” began. In 1997 the company launched the first automatic cappuccino system.

At the beginning of 2003 the cooperation with WMF started in the areas of development, procurement and technology. 34% of Schaerer was taken over by the German company. Shortly afterwards there was a cooperation in the field of service and customer service. According to the group, the fully automatic coffee machine segment achieved sales of 240 million Swiss francs, which means that the global market leader has a share of around 20%.

In 2006 it was taken over by the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik . In 2009 the headquarters were relocated from Moosseedorf (BE) to Zuchwil (SO). In 2010 the company generated more than 100 million Swiss francs.

With the takeover of the WMF Group in 2016, Schaerer joined Groupe SEB .
