When upgraded line Solothurn-Wanzwil (ground officially upgraded line Derendingen-Inkwil ), the opened on 12 December 2004 railway line from Solothurn to Wanzwil referred that there connection to the under Rail 2000 realized high-speed line from Mattstetten in Bern to Rothrist near Olten manufactures.
The upgraded line largely uses the route of the Solothurn – Herzogenbuchsee railway line, which was closed in 1992 .
The Solothurn – Wanzwil section has a single-track layout and, alongside the high-speed line, is the first line in Switzerland on which the European Train Control System is used in regular operation.
The maximum speed from Solothurn to Subingen is 140 km / h and from there 200 km / h. The splitting switch at the transition to the double lane can also be driven at 200 km / h.
The route is mainly used by the line 5 Genève-Aéroport / Lausanne - Biel / Bienne - Zurich HB (- St. Gallen ), which runs every hour between Olten and Solothurn without stopping.
Due to fears that when the line was opened and the new line was built (by December 12, 2004), ETCS might not be operational yet. Two conditions in the planning approval order of the Transport Department (DETEC) required that this fallback level be dismantled no later than ten years after the start of operations. In the course of the dismantling work planned for the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014, which should cost 7.4 million francs, optimizations were also planned.
