Suchy is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Suchy lies at 581 m above sea level. M. , 7 km south-southwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (air line). The cluster village extends on a plateau east of the Orbe plain , on the northern foothills of the Gros de Vaud plateau , in the Vaudois Central Plateau .
The area of the 6.7 km² municipal area covers a section of the northern Vaud Central Plateau. The western part of the municipality is occupied by the wide plateau of Suchy, which is bordered in the southwest by the Ruisseau des Combes brook , in the west by the steep drop to the Orbe plain and in the north by the erosion valleys of the village brook of Ependes. To the east, the municipality extends into the extensive forest area Bois de Suchy on the ridge between the Orbe plain and the valley of the Buron . At 607 m above sea level M. is the highest point of Suchy in the middle of the Bois de Suchy. In 1997, 3% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 38% for forests and woodlands and 59% for agriculture.
Some individual farms belong to Suchy. The neighboring communities of Suchy are Ependes in the north, Belmont-sur-Yverdon in the east, Essertines-sur-Yverdon in the south-east and Chavornay in the west .
population
With 599 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Suchy is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 91.6% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.5% German-speaking and 1.7% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Suchy was 354 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 229 people by 1980, a significant increase in population has been registered since then.
economy
Suchy was predominantly an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming (grain, rape, sugar beet) and fruit growing play an important role in the income structure of the population. Viticulture was also carried out until 1957 . Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades, Suchy has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Numerous workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Orbe and the Yverdon area .
traffic
The community is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is located away from the major thoroughfares. The Chavornay motorway junction on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon) opened in 1981 is around 4 km from the town center. Suchy is connected to Yverdon through a postbus course .
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 885 under the name Solpiaco id est Suzchie in a document of the chapter of Lausanne. Later the names Suichie (1218), Souchie (1219), Sochy (1226), Suchie (1227), Suschie (1233), Suchiez (1270) and Suchye (1317) appeared. The place name ( derived from the Latin Solpiacum ) goes back to the Roman surname Sulpius .
Suchy belonged to the Grandson rule in the Middle Ages and came under the Belmont rule in 1367 . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Suchy belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district.
Attractions
The village church originally dates back to the 12th century, but was rebuilt in the 18th century. Numerous characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the compact town center.
