The village extends on a ledge on the east side of the isolated hill Mont de Chamblon on the northern edge of the Orbe plain , in a panoramic position around 90 m above the plain and Lake Neuchâtel .

The area of the 2.86 km² municipal area covers a section of the northern Vaud Central Plateau . The main part of the area is taken up by the broad ridge of Mont de Chamblon, a red limestone hill on which at 552  m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. To the north, the municipality extends into the valley of the Bey , which separates the hill from the plateaus at the foot of the Jura. In 1997, 20% of the municipal area was in settlements, 24% in forests and woodlands, 55% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

Chamblon has two new residential quarters below the village, the farm settlements Les Uttins and Cossaux ( 440  m above sea level ) at the eastern foot of Mont de Chamblon, as well as a few individual farms. The neighboring municipalities of Chamblon are Treycovagnes , Suscévaz , Villars-sous-Champvent and Montagny-près-Yverdon .

population

The population of Chamblon was 172 in 1850 and 137 in 1900. Since 1970 (198 inhabitants) there has been a rapid population increase with almost tripling the number of inhabitants within 30 years.

economy

Chamblon was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Today agriculture and animal husbandry have only a marginal importance in the income structure of the population. There are other jobs in local small businesses and especially in the service sector. There is a geriatric hospital in Chamblon Castle. From 1979 to 1981, the Chamblon arsenal was set up on Mont de Chamblon. In the last few decades Chamblon has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Numerous workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Yverdon .

traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from Yverdon . The Yverdon-Ouest motorway junction on the A5 (Yverdon-Grandson) opened in 1984 is around 5 km from the town center. Chamblon is connected to Yverdon by a postbus course and thus connected to the public transport network.

history

The earliest evidence of settlement dates back to the Neolithic , when there was a lakeside settlement at the eastern foot of Mont de Chamblon near Les Uttins. At that time, Lake Neuchâtel had a slightly higher water level and reached far into the Orbe plain.

The first written mention of the place took place in the 12th century under the current name, which goes back to the Roman surname Camilius . Chamblon was part of the Montagny-le-Corbe estate since the Middle Ages ; in the 15th century it became a small rule of its own. After the Burgundian Wars , the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Grandson in 1476 , which was under the common rule of Bern and Friborg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Chamblon belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district.

Attractions

Chamblon Castle, on the eastern edge of the village, was built in the second half of the 18th century. From 1931 to 1960 it served as a sanatorium for tuberculosis sufferers, after which it was converted into a geriatric hospital for the chronically ill. Various extensions and the addition of new buildings in 1989 gave the castle its present form. Chamblon belongs to the parish of Champvent , but has had a chapel at the entrance to the village since 1932. In the town center there are some typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
