Novalles is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Novalles is 571 m above sea level. M. , 6 km north-northwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (air line). The farming village extends on a terrace at the southern foot of the Jura above the Arnon valley .
The area of the 2.1 km² large municipal area includes a small section on the southern slope of the Jura. The area stretches from the course of the Arnon to the north over the Novalles terrace and the densely wooded steep slope ( La Côte ) of the Chasseron chain, where at 1060 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was settled, 49% forest and woodland, 46% agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Novalles has a number of individual farms at the foot of the Jura. The neighboring communities of Novalles are Giez in the south , Vugelles-La Mothe in the west, Bullet in the north, Grandevent in the north-east and Fontaines-sur-Grandson in the south-east .
population
With 101 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Novalles is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 92.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.1% German-speaking and 2.0% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Novalles was 117 inhabitants in 1900, but then decreased to 68 inhabitants by 1980. In contrast, there has been a slight increase in population again, particularly in recent years.
economy
Novalles still lives mainly from agriculture , with arable farming predominating thanks to the fertile soils. There are no other jobs in the village outside of the primary sector. Some workers are commuters who mainly work in Yverdon. There used to be a mill on the Arnon.
traffic
The community is located off the major thoroughfares on the Jura footpath from Vuiteboeuf to Fontaines-sur-Grandson . The village is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Yverdon to Novalles.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing as early as 1179 under the name Novellis in a document from the Cistercian Abbey of Haut-Crêt . In 1403 the spelling Novelles appeared . The ownership changed several times during the Middle Ages . Novalles was partly under the rule of Grandson , and partly that of Champvent . Later the place came to the lands of Montagne-le-Corbe in the Bailiwick of Grandson, which was under the common rule of Bern and Friborg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime Novalles belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Léman, which followed the enactment of the Mediation Constitution opened in canton Vaud.
