Valeyres-sous-Rances is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

geography

Valeyres-sous-Rances is 507  m above sea level. M. , 3 km north of Orbe and 9 km west-southwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (beeline). The farming village extends in the valley of the Mujon , which is deepened in the Jura foot plateau between the Orbe plain and the Jura.

The area of ​​the 6.4 km² municipal area includes a section of the Jura foot plateau. The Mujon, its source stream Ruisseau du Vua and other small tributaries have dug a valley system into it. The highest point of Valeyres-sous-Rances is 600  m above sea level. M. reached on the plateau. To the east, the municipality extends over the height at Chalet Barbey ( 510  m above sea level ) in a narrow corner into the flat Orbe plain. With 621 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Valeyres-sous-Rances is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 95.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 1.8% German-speaking and 0.8% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Valeyres-sous-Rances was 479 in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease to 290 inhabitants was recorded by 1980, since then the population has increased significantly again.

Valeyres-sous-Rances was mainly an agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . Viticulture on the slopes of the Mujontal is still very important today . On the fertile soils of the Jura foot plateau and the Orbe plain, mainly arable farming is practiced. The local small business offers additional jobs. In the last few decades Valeyres-sous-Rances has developed into a residential community. Numerous workers are therefore commuters who work primarily in Orbe and Yverdon .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1272 under the name Valieres ; In 1485 the spelling Vallieres appeared . Valeyres-sous-Rances belonged to the lordship of Les Clées in the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village became part of the Kastlanei Les Clées under the governor of Yverdon. Because several Bernese patrician families had their summer residence in Valeyres-sous-Rances, the place was nicknamed little Bern in the 18th century . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Valeyres-sous-Rances belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . It was assigned to the Orbe district in 1798. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Valeyres-sous-Rances was a cultural center for the surrounding small towns.

Attractions

On the hill near La Robellaz is the reformed Saint-Jacques church, which was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 14th and 15th centuries over a previous Romanesque building. Valeyres-sous-Rances has a well-preserved townscape with several houses that are listed buildings. These include the Maison de Dîme (tithe house) from the 17th century with a crooked hip roof in the Bernese style, the Bonstetten house from the 17th century (rebuilt around 1820) and the Vieille Auberge, a characteristic winegrower's house from the 16th century with late Gothic windows . Le Manoir de Valeyres is a mansion flanked by a late Gothic stair tower, parts of which date from the 16th century, later several renovations took place.
