Soloist

The Soliat is a 1465  m above sea level. M. high mountain peak in the Neuchâtel Jura in Switzerland . The summit is located in the Neuchâtel municipality of Montalchez , around 15 km west-southwest of Neuchâtel , but the canton of Vaud also has a share in the ridge area of the Soliat. To the northeast of the Soliat is the much better known rock arena of the Creux du Van , one of the most important natural sights of the entire Jura.

geography

According to the general direction of strike of the Jura chains in this region, the ridge of the Soliat is oriented towards the southwest-northeast. The Soliat mountain range is bounded in the south by the Swiss plateau with Lake Neuchâtel and in the north by the valley basin of the Val de Travers . The chain continues to the southwest in the plateau of Nouvelle Censière , which leads to the Chasseron . To the east of the Soliat are the heights of Crêt aux Moines ( 1,445  m above sea level ) and Chaille ( 1,451  m above sea level ). The Montagne de Boudry ( 1387  m above sea level ), which follows further to the east, is separated from the Soliat by the Combe du Laga valley furrow .

The summit area of the Soliat is already in the subalpine vegetation zone . Otherwise, there are extensive Jura high pastures with the mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. There are several mountain farms at these heights. The Soliat is a popular lookout point because of its proximity to the Creux du Van. On a clear day, the view extends from the Mont Blanc massif to the Säntis .

geology

Creux du Van in the morning light

From a geological point of view, the ridge of the Soliat represents a broad anticline of the Folded Jura , the rock material of which comes from marine sediments of the Upper Jurassic ( Malm ). These limestone layers are excellently exposed in the 100 to 160 m high rock faces of the Creux du Van. The karst covered plateau in the ridge area of the Chasseron-Soliat chain has no surface rivers. Here you can find typical karst phenomena such as carts, sinkholes and larger, completely closed terrain hollows. Rainwater seeps into the ground and only reappears in springs on the slopes.
