geography
course
Gwalpetenbach
The Muota rises as Gwalpetenbach at an altitude of 1799.6 m above sea level. M. in the canton of Uri about 200 meters from the border with the canton of Schwyz .
The Gwalpetenbach first flows along the canton border through Gwalpeten to the north and takes on a number of further source streams to the right and left. It then runs through the Ruosalper forest, is strengthened on its right by the Spitzbächbach and joins south of the Sahli alpine farm with the Ruosalper Bach coming from the south-southwest to the Muota.

Source and mouth of the Muota
|
The Muota now leaves the forest, then flows further north in the canton of Schwyz through mountain meadows and is strengthened after about 200 meters on the right side of the Milchbüelenbach . Shortly afterwards, the Muota forms the small Saalisee into which the Eigelibach flows from the east . West of Oberbergli, the Mälchbergbach flows from the right and then a little further north at Seeberg on the other side of the Gigenbach . South of Bisisthal the Muota takes from the right Rätschtalbach and Mettelen on the same side of the chest Bach on.
The Muota now runs north-west through a strip of grassland accompanied by forest on the right and left. East of the political community of Muotathal , it is strengthened by the Starzlen from the northeast . At the entrance to the village, it takes on the Hüribach coming from the south on the left and in the village itself, first the Hofbach and then the Bächleren flow towards it from the right .
Between the village of Muotathal and the hamlet of Ried , which belongs to the municipality of Muotathal , the Muota runs in a west-northwest direction and is successively first on the right side through the Mettelbach , immediately afterwards on the other side through the Bürgelibach , then on the same side through the Rambach fed. The Tschuppelbach then follows from the right, the Bettbach from the right and finally the Tröliger Bach from the left.
The Muota now flows south along the hamlet. There you run on the left side of the Lochbach , the Blackerlibach , the Stoosbach and from the right the Riedbächli . The muota is then dammed into a small pond. Immediately afterwards, at the valley station of the Stossbahn, the Muota takes on the Chlingentobelbach on its right and a little later on the Helltobel (bach) on the other side . Then it turns sharply north and squeezes through a narrow valley. It now reaches the part of the municipality of Ibach , which belongs to the municipality of Schwyz , where you first come to the stream of the same name on the right-hand side and, a little further downriver, the Tobelbach .
The Muota now moves to the west, then crosses under the Autobahn 4 and then turns to the south-southwest at the hamlet of Schränggigen (in the area of the Wylen part of the municipality of Ingenbohl ). After that it is reinforced by the Seeweren at Wylen on its right side .
It still flows southwards through the Ingenbohl part of the community of Brunnen and finally flows out at an altitude of 434 m above sea level. M. in the Vierwaldstättersee .
The approximately 33-kilometer-long course of the Muota ends approximately 1366 meters below the origin of its source brook, so it has an average bed gradient of about 41 ‰.
Catchment area

---|---|---|---|
Gwalpetenbach | 2.8 | 7.58 | 560 |
Ruosalper Bach | 5.3 | 12.22 | 890 |
The Ruosalper Bach is longer, has a larger catchment area and a larger mean discharge (MQ). It is thus the main hydrological strand .

Hydrology
Medium drain
At the mouth of the Muota in Lake Lucerne, the modeled mean discharge rate (MQ) is 18.58 m³ / s. Their discharge regime type is nival de transition and their discharge variability is 19.
2005 flood
During the floods in August 2005, the amount of water at the measuring station in Brunnen swelled to 21 times the normal amount within a short time with a discharge of 433 m³ / s. In Ibach , it burst its banks on the morning of August 23, 2005.
bridges
On its way, the Muota is spanned by over 50 bridges and walkways.
Five covered wooden bridges cross the river, whereby the Suworow Bridge (1810) in Schwyz-Schlattli and the Wyler Bridge (1716) in Brunnen are buildings worthy of protection.
The old (out of operation) and new bridges of the Schwyz – Stoos funicular cross the river in Schwyz-Schlattli .
The rear Muotabrücke (1912) in Ibach is a listed building.
The A4 motorway (1983) spans the river in Schwyz .
