The Gibloux is a mountain range in front of the Freiburg Alps in western Switzerland and at 1205  m above sea level. M. the highest point in the Freiburg Central Plateau , around 17 km southwest of the city of Freiburg (as the crow flies). The former German name Gibel is no longer in use today.

geography

The Gibloux ridge is separated from the Alps in the east by the Saane valley , which is dammed up here to form Lac de la Gruyère , and in the south by the Bulle basin (Gruyère region). Towards the west, the Gibloux gradually becomes the valley of the Neirigue and towards the north it becomes the Molasse hills of the western Freiburg Central Plateau.

The actual Gibloux forms a ridge that runs from southwest to northeast and is made up of dense fir forests. The mountain ridge ends at the northern summit of the Gibloux, which is 1170 m above sea level. M. is only a little lower than the main summit and drops steeply to the north to the village of Vuisternens-en-Ogoz . The headwaters of the Glèbe stream (tributary of the Glâne ) are located on the northwest side of the ridge , while several streams arise on the southeast side and flow into the Lac de la Gruyère.

Geographically, the mostly wooded peaks of the Derbali (1072 m above sea level) and the Joux de Pra Fillieux (1069 m above sea level; Mont de Riaz ), which adjoin the actual mountain and are mostly wooded, also belong to the range of hills of the Gibloux. Between the latter two is located at 950 m above sea level. M. a moor landscape with the Étang des Bugnons , in which the Gérignoz stream rises.

The ridge is only sparsely populated and is mainly used for forestry . The pastures are cultivated extensively.

The first written mention of the mountain dates from 1141 under the name Monte Iubleur . The names monte Iublors (1143) and Jublors (1239) have been handed down from later times .

geology

The Gibloux is a relic of an alluvial fan that formed in the Miocene around 20 million years ago at the foot of the Alps . A large amount of erosion material from the Alps was deposited here, which is why the range of hills consists of the characteristic Nagelfluh , a heavily cemented conglomerate of fluvial transport debris and molasse sandstone .

tourism

The Swisscom transmission tower on the Gibloux

The Gibloux ridge is ideal for hiking. The 118 m high Swisscom radio and television tower can be seen from afar . The platform is accessible to the public at a height of 37 m, from which there is a view of the Gruyère region, the Alps and the Jura.

Also worth a visit is the permanent Georama exhibition in the tower, which gives an overview of the earth's history and the geography of the region. There is also a botanical nature trail up the mountain. In winter there is cross-country skiing tourism on the heights of Gibloux. If the snow conditions are good, a ski lift is in operation on the northwest slope of the main summit in the source area of the Glèbe.

Community merger

On January 1, 2016, the municipalities of Corpataux-Magnedens , Farvagny , Rossens (FR) , Le Glèbe and Vuisternens-en-Ogoz merged under the name Gibloux .
