Ernst Tremp

Ernst Tremp (born October 2, 1948 in Näfels ) is a Swiss historian of medieval history. From 2000 to 2013 he was the Abbey Librarian of St. Gallen.

life and work

He is a citizen of Schänis and Näfels and grew up in Näfels. After graduating from the college in Stans , he studied medieval history, historical auxiliary sciences and theology at the University of Friborg in Switzerland from 1968 and received his doctorate in 1980 with a thesis on the Cistercian monastery Altenryf (Hauterive) in the High Middle Ages. During his studies he was at the Sorbonne in 1974/75 with a grant from the French government . From 1981 to 1984 he worked at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH) in Munich with a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation and then became the executive secretary of the Medieval Institute at the University of Freiburg. In 1986 he completed his habilitation through Thegan von Trier, in 1987 he became a private lecturer and in 1993 he was adjunct professor.

From 2000 to 2013 he was the Abbey Librarian (Director) of the Abbey Library in St. Gallen , succeeding Peter Ochsenbein . In addition, he kept his titular professorship for medieval history at the University of Freiburg. He participates in various scientific committees at home and abroad, including a. since 2010 in the central management of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in Munich.

He deals with early medieval intellectual and cultural history and historiography , monasticism and nobility in the high Middle Ages, with Cistercians and Premonstratensians in western Switzerland. In 1995 he published the Viten Ludwigs des Pious von Thegan and Astronomus in the MGH . He is concerned according to its activity mainly with topics in the area of the monastery of St. Gall and its library, especially with the Plan of Saint Gall and the St. Gallen monastery stories ( Casus Sancti Galli ) Ekkehard IV. He new to the MGH 2020 has published.

Ernst Tremp is married to the medieval historian Kathrin Utz Tremp (* 1950), private lecturer and honorary doctorate from the University of Bern. They have two grown sons.
