Vinzenz Wohlwend OCist (born October 15, 1969 in Grabs , Switzerland as Rudolf Wohlwend ) is a Liechtenstein-Austrian Cistercian , Abbot of the Territorial Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau , Vorarlberg and Abbot President of the Cistercian Congregation of Mehrerau .

Life

Vinzenz Wohlwend grew up as the second of four children of his parents in Schaan , Liechtenstein . From 1981 to 1989 he attended the Cistercian high school in the Mehrerau. After graduating from high school , he studied Catholic theology in Salzburg , Einsiedeln (CH) and Benediktbeuern (D). In 1990 he began the novitiate in the Mehrerau and was ordained a priest on September 19, 1998 by Maximilian Aichern . From 1997 to 2009 he was educator at the “ Collegium Bernardi ” in Bregenz , and since 1999 he has been a religion teacher there. In 2009 he was appointed prior and novice master of Mehrerau Abbey by Abbot Anselm van der Linde .

Father Vinzenz Wohlwend was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the abbey by Pope Francis on August 1, 2018 after the resignation of Abbot Anselm . On September 19, 2018, the chapter of the monastery, chaired by Abbot Andreas Range from Marienstatt, elected him to succeed Anselm van der Linde. Pope Francis confirmed his election and appointed him territorial abbot of Wettingen-Mehrerau on November 23, 2018. The abbatial blessing took place on 2 January 2019 in the abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau instead. As the abbot of a regional abbey (formerly called Private Abbey ), Vinzenz Wohlwend is also a member of the Austrian Bishops' Conference . In addition, as a so-called abbot praeses , he heads the international Cistercian congregation of Mehrerau .
