Anselm van der Linde OCist (born on September 24, 1970 in Roodepoort , South Africa as Hendrik van der Linde ) is a South African-Austrian Cistercian , emeritus abbot of the territorial abbey Wettingen-Mehrerau , Vorarlberg and former abbot praeses of the Mehrerau congregation .

Life

Anselm van der Linde first studied political science at the University of Pretoria and during that time worked as an employee in the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of South Africa. After converting from Calvinism to Catholicism , he joined Mehrerau Abbey in August 1994. After a year as a philosophy student at the Swiss monastery in Einsiedeln , van der Linde began studying theology at the “ Angelicum ” in Rome . In 1999 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Klaus Küng . In 2005 he obtained his licentiate in church law at the Angelicum and was appointed church attorney for the diocese of Feldkirch . In 2006 he was appointed secretary of the Mehrerau Cistercian Congregation . He taught religion at the high school " Collegium Bernardi " founded by the Cistercians in Bregenz .

Van der Linde was elected on January 30th, 2009 to succeed Kassian Lauterer as the 53rd Abbot of Wettingen and 10th Prior of the Mehrerau and on February 18th by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed. The benediction took place on March 21, 2009 in the abbey church of Wettingen-Mehrerau . His motto is: Caritate invicem diligentes (“To be devoted to one another in love”) ( Rom 12,10  EU ). As abbot of a private abbey , van der Linde was also a member of the Austrian Bishops' Conference . In addition, as a so-called abbot praeses , he headed the international Cistercian congregation of Mehrerau . In July 2018, after ten years of service, he announced his resignation, which Pope Francis accepted on August 1 of the same year.

Anselm van der Linde is a Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . From 2009 to 2018 he was prior of the Bregenz Commandery.

In addition to German  , Van der Linde speaks several languages, including French , English , Italian , Afrikaans and Dutch . He has both South African and Austrian citizenship.

Act

During his tenure, Van der Linde was also responsible for dealing with the abuse affair in the Mehrerau monastery. The abbot apologized to the victims in a mailing from the monastery in March 2010, but in the judicial dispute with those affected he put the statute of limitations on claims for damages. After the defeat before the Supreme Court, there was ultimately an out-of-court settlement with two victims of the former boarding school director.
