St. Pauls ( Italian : San Paolo ) is a fraction of the municipality of Appiano in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It is known for its village festival and for the cathedral in the countryside .
location
St. Pauls is a fraction of the municipality of Appiano on the Weinstrasse, about 6 kilometers from Bozen, at 394 m slm. The villages of St. Michael , Missian , Unterrain , Berg and Frangart border on St. Pauls .
history
A late Bronze Age settlement ( Gamberoni site ) indicates the early settlement of St. Pauls. The Via Claudia Augusta presumably led through what is today the municipality, even if the course of the road is not secured. In 2005 the remains of a Roman villa with floor mosaics from the 4th century and a thermal bath were found in St. Pauls during construction work . It is believed that it could have been an Appius' estate. The first written mention of Eppan was in 590 by Paulus Diaconus in connection with the advance of the Franks to the south. In 1237, St. Pauls was first documented as “ecclesia sancti Pauli” . In 1456 the German place name "sendt Pauls zue Eppänn" is attested.

Celebrations and events
- The Paulser Village Festival: It attracts thousands of visitors and takes place every two years, usually in the first week of September.
- The wine village of St. Pauls has been presenting itself since 1998 during the Paulser Wine Culture Weeks. From the end of July to the beginning of August there are numerous events and themed evenings about wine. The highlight is the “hospitable table in the alleys of St. Pauls”.
- Since 1998 annual crib exhibition in December: It is the largest crib exhibition in South Tyrol with over 100 cribs, which couldn't be more different. Next to the parish church you can always find a living nativity scene.
"Cathedral in the Country"
The parish church dedicated to St. Paul was built between 1460 and 1647. Thanks to a closed building plan, characterized by the southern German late Gothic , the church appears uniform. The tower has a height of 86 m, the end of which is adorned with a magnificent onion dome. Two architectural styles were combined: the lower and middle parts of the tower are Gothic, while the upper part dates from the Baroque period. It was built between the 15th century and the middle of the 17th century. There are 9 bells in the bell tower. The death bell (as '') was cast by Anton Zwelfer in 1735. There is also the largest and probably most famous bell in South Tyrol, the "Anna-Maria" (tone: "A"), with a diameter of 183.5 cm and a weight of 3,680 kg in the church tower. In the summer of 1984 the bell was completely renewed and a counter pendulum system was installed.
