Berg ( Italian Monte ) is a fraction of the municipality Eppan on the Wine Route in the Überetsch area in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

location

The Berg fraction lies in the west of the municipality of Eppan. It is bounded in the north by the Eppan fractions Perdonig and Missian and in the east by St. Pauls and St. Michael . In the south, the municipality of Kaltern joins and in the west, with the border on the Mendelkamm , the Trentino municipalities of Sarnonico , Malosco and Ronzone .

The area of Berg ranges from a height of 447  m to 1571  m on the Mendelkamm. About a third of the area up to a height of approx. 600  m is inhabited and used for agriculture; the rest is forest.

Location typical

On the approximately one kilometer wide and three kilometer long settlement area of Berg at the foot of the slope of the Mendelkamm ridge, the residential properties are widely scattered. Among them are numerous historical residences . Extensive apple and wine plantations extend between the houses, and Pinot Blanc thrives particularly well in these locations . A second source of income for the residents is tourism.

The central artery of the fraction is the mountain road (Via Monte) leading from St. Michael to Perdonig, from which numerous narrow side streets branch off.

history

Despite numerous old residences, Berg is the youngest fraction of Eppan. It was formed by local council resolution on March 17, 2016 from parts of the St. Pauls and St. Michael parliamentary groups. The term Eppan-Berg for the residential area is older. Some of the historical relationships with neighboring factions continue to exist. The northern side of Bergstrasse and its side streets belongs to the St. Pauls school and parish area, the southern to St. Michael.

Attractions

In addition to the numerous mansions that are under monument protection, the Freudenstein Castle and the Moos-Schulthaus mansion are particularly worth mentioning. The former dates from the 13th century, has its own chapel (St. Andreas) and, after extensive renovation, is now used as a congress and recreation center. A golf training center is connected. The last major structural change to the Moos-Schulthaus residence from the 14th century took place around 1650. Since 1983 the residence has been a museum for medieval living culture.

The church of St. Justina, built in the 17th century and belonging to the parish of St. Paul, has a simple ridge vault and a three-sided choir closure. The main motif of the picture in the baroque carved altar is St. Justina .

As for natural sights, the dry grassland on the Kreuzstein, classified as a natural monument, and the biotope of the Eppaner Eislöcher on the southern border are to be mentioned.
