St. Anton and the somewhat smaller Pfuss (sometimes incorrectly also written and spoken Pfuss ) are two places that represent a unit in terms of settlement geography and administratively form a fraction of the municipality of Kaltern in South Tyrol as St. Anton- Pfuss . The Italian name is S. Antonio-Pozzo.

location

The two villages are located at the foot of the Überetscher slope of the Mendelkamm above the center of Kalterer village. They are separated from one another by the Pfusser Lahn or Mühlbach brook , which rises below the Mendel Pass . The proportion of green space is significantly larger than the built-up areas and consists of agricultural land and mixed forest, which is mainly composed of beech and pine.

The valley station of the Mendelbahn is located in St. Anton . St. Anton is also the location of the community's sports facilities. In the church of St. Anton there are frescoes from the 15th century, the choir is designed in Gothic style. The district got its name from the church patron for centuries. The current church building, which stands on the site of an even older former church, also dates from the 15th century. On the outside of the church, St. Christopher is painted larger than life, as well as on the outside of the small church by Pfuss, which is dedicated to St. Roch . One of the sights is the Mühlburg mansion, hidden between other houses, as an early example of the Überetsch style . The residence was first mentioned in 1231, originally known as the "Tower in Pfuss" (popularly also "Pfusser Gschlössl" or "Schlössl" for short). The townscape is also determined by the Giovanelli residence, which was built in 1853 and redesigned in 1906 in historicizing forms .

Surname

St. Anton is called St. Antenig in dialectal terms . This form goes back to a Latin variant of Antonius , namely Antonicus . The short forms Tonig and Töni derived from this are also used as first names in some places in Tyrol in the 21st century.
