Harald Krüger (born October 13, 1965 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German manager and was Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG from 2015 to August 15, 2019 .

Life and career

After graduating from the Hoffmann von Fallersleben School in Braunschweig in 1984 , he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig (basic course) and the RWTH Aachen (main course) and graduated in 1991 (Dipl.-Ing. Mechanical engineering). From 1991 to 1992 he was research assistant at the "Institute for Dynamics of Flight Systems" at the German Aerospace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen .

In 1992 he started at BMW AG as a trainee in the "Technical Planning / Production" department. From 1993 to 1995 he was a project engineer in the construction of the BMW plant in Spartanburg (USA). From 1995 to 1997 he was a personnel officer for test vehicle construction in the Munich “Research and Innovation Center” (FIZ). From 1997–2000, Krüger was in charge of the “Strategic Production Planning” department. In 2000 he was appointed head of the “Production Strategies and Communication” department. From 2003 he headed engine production at BMW's Hams Hall plant in the UK . From 2007 to 2008, Krüger was head of the “Technical Integration” division.

On December 1, 2008, Krüger was appointed to the BMW Board of Management as the person responsible for human resources and social affairs; on July 1, 2012, this department was transferred to Milagros Caiña Carreiro-Andree . From July 1, 2012, he took over responsibility for MINI, Motorrad, Rolls-Royce and Aftersales BMW Group on the Board of Management. On April 1, 2013, he became the board member responsible for production.

At the end of the Annual General Meeting on May 13, 2015, Krüger became Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

On July 5, 2019, Krüger announced that he would not extend his contract as CEO of BMW, which expired in April 2020. According to other press reports, this happened against the background that the supervisory board was not ready to extend its expiring contract. On August 15, 2019, Krüger resigned from the Board of Management of BMW AG.

Between the day he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management and the announcement of his retirement, BMW AG shares lost 6.4% of their value per year. Under his predecessor Norbert Reithofer, however , the price had risen by 13.9% per year.
