Helmut Gunter Wilhelm Panke (born August 31, 1946 in Fürstenwalde / Spree ) is a German manager .

Career

After a school exchange year at the Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter / New Hampshire, USA , which was achieved by receiving the American Field Service scholarship. Helmut Panke completed his Abitur in 1966 at the Klenze Gymnasium in Munich. From 1966 to 1968 he was a reserve officer in the armored forces of the Bundeswehr .

He then began studying physics in Munich in 1968, which he graduated with a diploma in 1972 . This was followed by research work at the University of Munich with a subsequent doctorate in nuclear physics .

From 1976 to 1978 research at the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research followed with teaching duties at the University of Munich .

He then worked for the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company Inc. in Düsseldorf and Munich before moving to the BMW Group in 1982 . Initially, he headed the main planning and controlling department in the research and development department, and later the areas of corporate planning , organization and corporate strategy.

In April 1993 he became head of BMW Holding in the United States and on June 4th announced the establishment of BMW US Manufacturing Company , LLC. Two years later, Panke was appointed Chief Representative. In 1996 he was promoted to the company's board of directors, where he was initially responsible for human resources, social affairs and information processing. In March 1999 he took over the finance department.

From 2002 to 2006 Helmut Panke was CEO of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG .

At the 2004 General Meeting, Helmut Panke was elected to the Board of Directors of UBS AG and has been a member of the Human Resources and Compensation Committee and the Risk Committee since 2008. At the Annual General Meeting of UBS Group AG on May 7, 2015, he stepped down from the Board of Directors due to the regulatory provisions on the term of office.

On September 1, 2006, Helmut Panke handed over the position of Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW to the previous Board Member for Production , Norbert Reithofer .

Helmut Panke is one of the “most popular managers” in Germany. Among other things, he received the awards for Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 , Entrepreneur Prize of the German Magazine Publishers 2004 , Chef of the Year 2005 and the Bavarian Order of Merit in 2006 . In 2006 he was awarded the Prize for Understanding and Tolerance by the support group of the Jewish Museum Berlin .

Mandates in companies, organizations and foundations

Helmut Panke has been a member of the Microsoft Board of Directors since 2003 and has also been a member of the Supervisory Board of Bayer AG since April 27, 2007 .

In August 2009, Singapore Airlines announced that Dr. Having appointed Helmut Panke to its board of directors as a non-executive director.

He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Dubai International Capital LLC, the investment vehicle of Dubai Holding, and a member of the Supervisory Board of Bayer Schering AG and Bayer Pharma AG.

Previous mandates were positions at UBS Group AG and the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt .

Permanent functions in interest groups

Helmut Panke was a board member of the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), the Association of the German Automobile Industry (VDA) and the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany.
