The Hoffmann von Fallersleben School is a grammar school founded in Braunschweig in 1876 . It is named after the German author, Germanist and poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben .

With almost 900 students and around 80 teachers at two locations, it is one of the largest grammar schools in the region. It has an all-day operation (open all-day school ) and a comprehensive range of working groups as well as an upper level profile with four elective branches.

The school director has been Ilona Gerhardy-Grotjan since 2016.

history

1876 to 1945

In contrast to the other, ducal , grammar schools in Braunschweig, the Hoffmann-von-Fallersleben School was always run by the city's citizens. The first class of the newly founded, independent urban secondary school was set up in 1876 according to the new concept of scientific and vocational education (preparation for studying at the TU Braunschweig ). The majority of the student body came from until the middle of the 20th century. the bourgeois middle class self-employed master craftsmen and tradespeople, merchants, etc. a. Service provider.

In the same year the school was recognized as independent, it was given its own school building opposite the "Brüdernkirche" ("Butt Brothers", today a multifunctional business building) in the Braunschweig city center. A year later, the classes moved there.

Seven years later, in 1883, the school received the right to award the Abitur and was renamed "Städtische Oberrealschule". With this new type of school, technical and commercial professions should be promoted. The first Abitur award took place in 1887.

The range of courses was expanded in 1894 to include historical and linguistic subjects. The resulting focus on technology, foreign languages and business has persisted in all situations to this day, despite various unification attempts by politicians.

In the course of the growing nationalism before the First World War and the increasing acceptance of the monarchy in large parts of the population, the school bore the name of the Brunswick regent Duke Johann Albrecht (1857–1920) , who resigned that year : "Duke Johann Albrecht Oberrealschule" .

Only at the end of the Weimar Republic was the school renamed again at an internal suggestion. From 1929 it was given back its old name - also as a visible sign of the end of the monarchy: "Städtische Oberrealschule butt brothers".

Under the National Socialist government, the upper secondary school was upgraded to a grammar school and then named after the poet of the Deutschlandlied in 1941 : "Hoffmann-von-Fallersleben-Gymnasium". This enabled the teaching staff to fend off naming the school after the Nazi politician Kurt Schmalz .

1945 until today

During the Second World War , the “Butt Brothers” school building was almost completely destroyed by repeated bombings in Braunschweig. But already in 1945 the school temporarily resumed operations in the premises of other schools. The HvF was the first in the region to introduce co-educational teaching in 1951 . It was groundbreaking for the school culture in the region.

As one of the last schools, the grammar school received a new building on Sackring in the western ring area in 1952; the situation with regard to the available space remained precarious until the end of the 1970s. Several classes and courses were taught in different buildings. In the 1960s and 1970s, the school (both teachers and students) was considered progressive and liberal in the region. To what extent the student potential from the areas of the western ring area, which is a social hotspot in Braunschweig, the Chancellor's field and earlier also the rural area up to Vechelde is questionable, but definitely worth considering.

After the closure of the municipal swimming pool "Bad am Sackring" in 1998 - long overdue from the earlier planning - the new school auditorium was inaugurated in its converted premises. This largest school auditorium in Braunschweig is used not only for school purposes but also for events organized by established parties, district fairs, panel discussions and much more. To celebrate the 125th anniversary, a festival week was held in 2001, during which the historical roots of this school were ascertained.

As a result of the dissolution of the orientation level by the Lower Saxony state government , the Hoffmann-von-Fallersleben School was transformed from a 7- to 9-level grammar school in 2004 and was given the former OS Lehndorf as a school building as a branch. After the transition from Sek II to the upper profile level by the Minister of Education, in addition to the compulsory mathematical, scientific and linguistic profile, an artistic, musical and social science profile was set up as an HvF-specific economic profile. Spanish established itself as a second regular foreign language alongside French and Latin and has developed well since then.

As part of the school renovation project of the city of Braunschweig, the construction of an outbuilding with four classrooms, a cafeteria, a media library and a library was completed in the summer of 2008.

School offers

In the upper level, the HvF offers a scientific and a linguistic profile, an economic profile and an art / music profile. In addition, there are numerous school offers in various areas, e.g. Sometimes from grade 5.

foreign languages

In addition to the normal subjects English, Spanish, French and Latin, the school offers Chinese as a voluntary study group as required.

There is also the possibility of acquiring various language certificates via preparatory courses: the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) certificate (English for business), the DELF / DALF and DELE . Successful completion of these exams usually entitles them to attend university institutions in a foreign language (e.g. England, France, Spain). The Science-English project course is also offered. Both individuals and school groups have successfully taken part in national and international foreign language competitions (e.g. by the French TV channel TV5 or the Spanish Instituto Cervantes) in recent years .

There are also numerous exchange trips, e.g. B. to Bury (France) (8th grade), Seville (Spain) (10th grade) and Omaha (USA) (11th grade). There are also study trips to Trier (8th grade, Latin students ) and to Herne Bay (England) (10th grade).

Natural sciences

In addition to the natural science focuses in the classroom, there are numerous offers in the AG area. Schoolchildren deal with digital storage techniques, have set up an atomic force microscope, work on current chemical and technical issues and in the field of environmental protection, carry out geophysical measurements or deal with GPS signals. Among other things, groups regularly take part in "Jugend forscht" (in chemistry and physics) and the "Chemistry Olympiad" and present results at CeBIT in the project "Galileo goes to school". The school has received several awards for success in the projects mentioned, making it one of the 10 most successful schools in Germany. Currently, students have competed in the national finals of Jugend forscht (one group in 2013, two groups in 2014) and won a silver medal internationally at the CASTIC competition (2014) in China. The "ITech3 information technology" project in the field of robotics should also be mentioned, as well as the scientific investigations at Lake Dowe in Braunschweig.

economy and society

One focus of the school is on economics; Courses in business studies as well as the working group Business English (LCCI certificate), "Management Information Game" and rhetoric & presentation are offered.

As a co-founder of a regional set, the HvF participates annually in projects such as “ Jugend debattiert ” and is very successful at both the district and state level, and most recently in 2015 even at the federal level.

Music, art, culture

In contrast to many other schools, the subjects of art and music have equal rights; they are housed in a common profile. The special offers include projects on sculpture and photography, and there is also an orchestra and theater for all ages.

particularities

Theater / Performing Play (DS)

On a voluntary basis, a lively activity in the field of theater / " performing games " has developed. There is both an upper school theater, a foreign language theater and a teacher cabaret. All performances always get a lot of attention and praise from the audience and in the local and regional press. Since 2010 there has also been DS as a subject at the HvF (age group 10-12). In addition to practice, theory also comes into its own here.

IServ

In the subject of computer science , the school server IServ was developed by a group of students . Today, this system is an important part of teaching and communication at almost 1,000 schools in Germany and has earned the developers a lot of media attention.

Student company

The student company "HvFair" has existed since 2017 and sells fair-trade products in its own break sale. As part of this, the students can acquire entrepreneurial and commercial skills.

Sports

In the field of sports, the school's focus is on hockey and athletics. A large number of successes have already been achieved in the city's internal school competitions and in the “ Youth trains for the Olympics ”. There is an above-average number of students who can show national or international successes or appointments in national selections or high-class teams in their respective sports (hockey, handball, basketball , canoe, triathlon , athletics).

A special focus is on endurance sports. The “Alpine project” (high mountain hiking tour) and the ski week take place regularly, as well as occasional running projects (e.g. relay race Braunschweig - Zugspitze (2001) and Braunschweig - Wolsztyn / Poland (2002)).

Branch office Lehndorf

The branch in Lehndorf has existed since 2004. There, around 250 pupils are taught in the fifth and sixth grades.
