Sparta is located in the Midwest Wisconsin both sides of La Crosse River , a left tributary of the border to Minnesota forming Mississippi .

The Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the La Crosse River State Trail meet in Sparta , two rail trails for hikers and cyclists that run along the route of a former railway line of the former Chicago and North Western Railway . In winter, the hiking trails can also be used with snowmobiles.
With the Sparta / Fort McCoy Airport one in-possession of the US Army airfield for civilian use (located 8 km west of Sparta General Aviation ) is open. The nearest commercial airport is La Crosse Regional Airport (43.4 km west-southwest).
