Eschenbach monastery church

The monastery Eschenbach (lat. Abbatia BMV et Sanctae Catharinae ) is a Cistercian - Abbey in Eschenbach in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland ; It was donated by Walther III, Baron von Eschenbach around 1290.

history

The monastery goes to a foundation of Freiherr Walther III. von Eschenbach back to Niedereschenbach in today's municipality of Inwil around 1290 . The chapel of St. Katharina in Niedereschenbach is still a reminder of the seat of the monastery , which at that time belonged to the Augustinian order . In 1309 the nuns moved from Nieder- to their current location in Obereschenbach. In 1588 the nuns joined the Cistercian order and have since lived according to the rules of St. Benedict under the motto “Pray and work”. The guest house was built in 1612. In 1625 the foundation stone for the new monastery church, 24 monastery cells, the cloister and the chapter house was laid. In 1683 the guest house was renovated and expanded and the famous sundial was created, which is the largest of its kind in Switzerland. In 1910 the neo-baroque monastery church was built and consecrated.
