Location of the Wollmatingen district in the city of Konstanz

Wollmatingen is a formerly independent municipality , which is now part of the city of Konstanz in the Baden-Württemberg district of Konstanz .

geography

The Wollmatinger Ried nature reserve , including the coastal islands of Triboldingerbohl (Langenrain) and Mittler or Langbohl , also belongs to the area of the former municipality near Lake Constance .

history

Prehistoric pile dwellings were found in the “Langenrain” area at the confluence of the Rhine with the Untersee . The site has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps since 2011 . Furthermore, a Roman settlement was discovered in 1883 .

The current location is likely to have originated in the 7th century. This is supported by excavations in the district. Karl Martell left the place to the Reichenau monastery in 724 . In the tension between the important monastery, the episcopal and imperial city of Constance and the Coming Mainau of the Teutonic Order , the village was unable to develop its own history. From 1200 it is recorded as the St. Martin parish.

Agriculture and forestry, viticulture and peat cutting fed the citizens for centuries. Industrialization began around 1840 , first in the textile industry, later supplemented by chemistry and electronics. When Wollmatingen was incorporated by Konstanz in 1934 , the area of the city doubled. In 2014 there were around 6600 inhabitants in Wollmatingen.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the formerly independent municipality of Wollmatingen shows a red cross in silver , covered with a golden heart shield , inside the black village symbol (a double cross, the sparse foot of which is curved on both sides and ends in a cross shape).
