Thomas Sättele

Thomas Sättele (born March 7, 1808 in Wollmatingen ; † April 29, 1880 there ) was a Baden teacher, mayor and freedom fighter during the Baden Revolution of 1848.

Life

Sättele, originally a teacher like his father, became a counselor at the age of 33 in the almost 2000-strong community of Wollmatingen not far from Constance on Lake Constance. In 1845 he becomes mayor. When Friedrich Hecker failed with his ideas for a republic in the Frankfurt pre-parliament , he was looking for a fight. Thomas Sättele recruits 50 volunteers for him, using them in the surrounding communities. He promotes democracy in mayors' meetings and criticizes the reluctance of the local city council in Constance. He experiences resistance from his wife. She is pregnant with the 6th child and doesn't want him to go to war. When she hides the sword from him, Sättele takes the sword of the Paul figure from the church. His colleague from Allensbach complies with Saddle's request and sends armed farmers to Hegne. There they meet with Thomas Sättele and, under his leadership, move to Constance for the rally on April 17, 1848.

On May 6, 1848, Sättele was temporarily arrested for inciting citizens and equipping them with weapons. But he still remains in office. On June 20, the local council, chaired by Thomas Sättele, approves additional pay, the next meeting on October 21 is chaired by Mayor Stadelhofer. Thomas Sättele is probably finally suspended due to the general Seekreis Ordinance of July 14, 1849, like all those suspected of high treason. It was not until 1869 that he was allowed to give in to the election of his fellow citizens as mayor again with the approval of the district office. He officiates until 1877 and dies in 1880.

reception

The State Center for Political Education in Baden-Württemberg dedicated a commemorative plaque to him on St. Martin's Church in 1998/99 as part of the Paths of Revolutionaries campaign . In 1995 Wollmatingen named a street after him.
