Les Steckel

Les Steckel (* 1. July 1946 in Whitehall , Pennsylvania ) is a former American Football players and coaches. He was head coach of the Minnesota Vikings for a year and after his release worked as an assistant coach for the New England Patriots , Denver Broncos , Tennessee Titans , Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers .

Career

Steckel went to the University of Kansas , where he enjoyed great success in boxing . After his return from the Vietnam War in 1970, he played for a year on the football team at his naval base. In 1973, he took over as head coach of the University of Colorado football team . In 1978, the NFL team San Francisco 49ers signed him . In 1979 he joined the coaching staff of the Minnesota Vikings . In 1984 he took over the team as head coach after long-term coach Bud Grant announced his resignation. However, the season was extremely unpleasant and ended with only three wins out of thirteen defeats. The Vikings sacked Steckel after just one season, Grant took over the team temporarily for a year. In the following years Les Steckel worked primarily as an offensive coordinator. In 2003 he left the coaching staff of the Buffalo Bills and thus the National Football League .
