Christ Church (Wollmatingen)
The Christ Church Wollmatingen is the church of the Protestant parish of Konstanz - Wollmatingen , it belongs to the parish of Konstanz of the Evangelical Church in Baden and was built in 1933/1934 by the architects Karl Kunzmann and Berthold Sack. It is located in a prominent location in the Constance district of Wollmatingen on the Drumlin Längerbohl at an altitude of about 430 m .
history
The first evangelical church services in Wollmatingen were celebrated in 1904, and in 1905 Wollmatingen received his first independent pastoration (Rev. Fünfgeld). After a long period of vacancy during the First World War, the Wollmatingen parish was initially incorporated into the Konstanz parish in 1919, and on April 1, 1931, it became independent again.
The foundation stone for the Christ Church was laid on July 30, 1933 and its consecration on September 16, 1934. On June 1, 1935, the previous vicar Hermann Senges was appointed pastor. He remained in office until his death on March 7, 1971. In 1963 the parish, which until then stretched over the whole of Bodanrück , was divided into three independent parishes: Wollmatingen, Allensbach and Litzelstetten .
renovation
In 2004, the interior of the Christ Church was completely renovated. The aim was not only to modernize the church in terms of energy technology, but also to make it more attractive and friendlier. This task was solved by the Konstanz architects Markus Lanz and Nicolas Schwager. In 2005 they received the Good Buildings Award from the Association of German Architects .
inner space
The basic idea behind the design by Lanz and Schwager is the perception of space in traditional sacred spaces, in which the view turns upwards after passing through a low anteroom. An important aspect was the harmonization of the materials used in the interior: the use of maple and spruce for the floor, ceiling, gallery and furniture aims to create a bright and friendly, yet calm and contemplative room atmosphere.
The wave-shaped wooden slats in the ceiling bring movement and trace the round arches of the windows. The back wall of the choir room, kept in medium blue, emphasizes the sacred character of the room, especially when the rays of the sun come in, it provides a frame for the colored windows by Heidelberg artist Harry MacLean .
While the chancel used to end at the choir, the altar pedestal was moved into the nave during the redesign and thus the altar moved more into the center of the church. At the same time, the previously existing pulpit was removed and replaced by an ambo on the front of the altar pedestal.
The crucifix in the center of the chancel is a work from Tyrol. During the renovation in 2004 it was removed and after the reopening it was put up again with new beams made from the wood of the old pews. The baptismal bowl was designed and manufactured by the glass artist Andreas Dierig from Überlingen.
A leftover from the Christ Church before 2004 is a glazed half-relief from an episode of Jesus' ordeal on the cross, at the western end of the south wall of the nave at a height of about two meters. The age and origin of the work of art are unknown; a twin piece hangs in the corresponding place in the former Protestant chapel in the main building of the Reichenau Center for Psychiatry , which was inaugurated in 1954.
