Emil Stadelhofer
Emil Stadelhofer (born December 8, 1872 in Wollmatingen , Konstanz , † January 11, 1961 in Überlingen ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Emil Stadelhofer came from a farming family. From 1888 to 1891 he did an apprenticeship as a stonemason in Konstanz and Frankfurt a. M. and besides his apprenticeship, attended the Konstanzer Gewerbeschule and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Frankfurt. From 1894 to 1900 he studied at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe in the sculpture class of Hermann Volz .
He made educational trips to Central Europe from his own resources, in 1900 he received a Baden state scholarship for a stay in Rome, where he subsequently lived until 1910. In 1911 he married the daughter of the historian Friedrich Noack , the couple then lived in Munich, before finally settling in Freiburg im Breisgau at the end of 1912 . There he took over the studio of Julius Seitz, who died in May 1912 . During the First World War , Stadelhofer served three years as a soldier at the front.
In 1946 he was appointed curator of monuments in Überlingen by the French occupying power . In 1954 he wrote his memoirs and dedicated them to his sons.
Act
Even while he was still a student, Stadelhofer successfully participated in public competitions for monuments, for example at the age of 25 he created the bust of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff , which is still located at Meersburg Castle today. It is based on the memorial to the author that Anton Rüller and Heinrich Fleige created in 1896 for the Hülshoff Castle in Münster . He won the competitions for the war memorials in Radolfzell and Überlingen and created the bust of the Baden court actor Heinrich Reiff for Seckenheim .
In 1915 he created, among other things, the bust on Otto Winterer's grave and in 1913 a monument to Alban Stolz in front of the Konviktkirche of the Collegium Borromaeum . The bust of Winterer was created by Stadelhofer because the city of Freiburg wanted to avoid a conflict with him. This was founded in Stadelhofer's participation in a design competition for the war memorial to the First World War and the slow implementation of the project.
His other works from the Freiburg era include the war memorial in Welschingen im Hegau from 1922 and the one in Emmendingen . It dates from 1921 and shows a mourning Germania . In 1923 his design for the mourning theology was realized. This is now in the Konviktkirche in Freiburg . It is intended to commemorate the 108 priests, Konvikt students and theology students who died in the First World War . In 1930 Stadelhofer created a 3 by 2 meter commemorative plaque made of marble for the victims of the First World War for the Freiburg publisher Herder . He created the portrait bust for the grave of Chancellor Constantin Fehrenbach, who died in 1926, in the main cemetery.
For his hometown Wollmatingen he also created a war memorial, the lion fountain, also one in Wehr (Baden) . For Constance, to which Wollmatingen is now a part, he made heads for the former main post office at the Marktstätte and a naked “sun youth” in the courtyard. He created the font for the castle chapel in Planegg , Bavaria .
