The Dolphin Books are a series of anthologies with contributions to the history of the city of Konstanz and its immediate neighborhood on the German and Swiss sides. They are published by the Delphin Circle, an informal association of mostly five history friends from Konstanz, who both write the majority of the articles and take care of the editing.
Surname
Volumes 1 (1986) to 4 (1995) appeared as “Constance contributions to history and the present. New episode". This title alludes to the “Constance Contributions to Baden History” (or “Constance Historical Contributions”), which the Konstanz high school professor Philipp Ruppert (1842–1900) published between 1888 and 1899 in 5 volumes. From volume 5 (1997) on, the main title is “Das DelphinBuch”, based on the house “ Zum Delphin ” in the old town of Constance (Hussenstrasse 14) as the place where the Delphin Circle was founded.
content
The dolphin books are a forum for the presentation and communication of the (predominantly more recent) Konstanz city history and the history of construction and urban development. So far, 12 volumes with a total of 130 articles on almost 3000 pages have been published. The focus is on (1.) the history of construction and use of historical buildings as well as individual streets and quarters, (2.) the history of entire city districts and settlement areas in the urban area, (3.) personal history (on the one hand as biographies, on the other hand in the form of personal memories, especially to the war and post-war period), (4.) art (in addition to photography, some less well-known art forms such as student postcards and bookplates) and culture (especially Carnival), (5.) overview representations (e.g. Constance cemeteries, businesses in the city and District of Constance). The neighboring towns south of Konstanz in the Swiss Thurgau are regularly taken into account.
