Philipp Ruppert

Johann Philipp Joseph Ruppert (born July 20, 1842 in Walldürn ; † September 13, 1900 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German high school teacher, archivist, historian and art collector.

Live and act

After attending grammar schools in Offenburg and Wertheim , Philipp Ruppert studied classical philology at the universities of Freiburg i. Br. And Heidelberg . Since 1872 he was a teaching trainee in Karlsruhe , Villingen and Gernsbach . He received his first permanent position in 1876 as a professor at the higher middle school in Gernsbach, and in 1877 he changed to the executive board at the higher middle school in Achern . From 1880 to 1885 he taught as a professor at the Mannheim grammar school , then briefly in Baden-Baden .

As a trainee teacher, Ruppert began to discover the history of the places and landscapes in which he worked, first Gernsbach and the Murgtal , then Achern and the Ortenau . He saw Konstanz as the real focus of his life and work , where he taught as a professor at the grammar school from 1886 to 1893 and briefly headed the city archive in 1889/1890.

Here Ruppert began to publish a series of five booklets, the first of which he titled as Constance Contributions to Baden History ; in the following four issues he limited himself to the history of Constance, which is why he changed the title to Constance Historical Contributions . In the preface to the first issue, Ruppert accused the director of the Baden General State Archives, Friedrich von Weech , of having withheld from him sources on the history of Margrave Bernhard I of Baden from the Grand Ducal House and State Archives. This prompted von Weech to file a complaint for defamation, which in 1893 resulted in Ruppert's transfer to the Progymnasium in Durlach , which Ruppert understood as a "punitive transfer". The anger of the archive director followed Ruppert to his grave: Von Weech included him on the death list of the fifth part of the Baden biographies , but characterized him slightly condescendingly as "the author of numerous historical works, some of which are not without value as collections of materials". In doing so, he does not do justice to the source-saturated works of Ruppert, which today are often out of date, but not completely replaced by modern editions. Ruppert let humorous comments flow into his cultural-historical mishaps.

In Konstanz, Ruppert began to put together a collection of pictures, initially by local artists, which grew rapidly through contact with Swiss artists. After being transferred to Durlach, he made contacts with the Karlsruhe art scene. After his death, a catalog of his collection was published with 792 numbers, mainly paintings, drawings and graphics from the 17th to 19th centuries from Central Europe, France and Italy.

Philipp Ruppert had been married to Maria, nee Baroness von Girardi, since 1873.

The city history series of Dolphin Books has been published in Konstanz since 1986 as Konstanz contributions to the past and present. Founded in 1888 by Philipp Ruppert as a Constance contribution to Baden history. Continued by the Delphin-Kreis Konstanz. New episode .
