Syracuse and the Pantalica Felsnekropolis is one of the UNESCO -listed site of world heritage in Italy . The serial world heritage site is located in Sicily and includes several ancient sites in the city of Syracuse as well as the necropolis of Pantalica, which is located near the city .
background
Pantalica an important settlement of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age , dating from the 13th century BC. Until the 7th century BC Was inhabited without interruptions. The prehistoric Pantalica culture , of which it was the capital, is named after her . With the Greek colonization of Sicily, the decline of Pantalica began, soon after the settlement was completely abandoned. The most important remains of the settlement are the rock chamber tombs of their necropolis .
Syracuse (Greek Syakusai ) was founded in 734 BC by Doric settlers from Corinth on the island of Ortygia and soon expanded to the mainland. In the course of the following centuries it developed into the largest and most powerful polis in ancient Sicily. In the First Punic War , Syracuse made peace with the Romans and, under Hieron II, became the capital of a Hellenistic kingdom that encompassed the part of Sicily in the southeast of the island that was not conquered by the Romans. In the Second Punic War , Syracuse, which had in the meantime allied itself with the Punic , was destroyed in 212 BC. Conquered by the Romans.

Syracuse and the rock necropolis of Pantalica was entered in the list of UNESCO World Heritage in 2005 based on a resolution of the 29th session of the World Heritage Committee. The entry was made on the basis of criteria (ii), (iii), (iv) and (vi).

The serial world heritage site consists of three separate areas. These cover a total of 898.46 ha of protection . The individual protection areas are each surrounded by buffer zones, which have a total area of 5,519.4 ha.
