That in the 2nd century BC Vicenza, which was founded in northern Italy in BC, grew under the rule of the Republic of Venice in the 15th to 18th centuries. The work of Andrea Palladio (1508–80) based on the architecture of ancient Rome shaped the unique appearance of Vicenza. His architectural style, widespread in Veneto, had a decisive influence on the development of architecture and spread to England, other European countries and North America.
In 1994 , the city of Palladios was originally named Vicenza, only buildings in the immediate vicinity of Vicenza were protected. Since many of Palladio's villas are outside Vicenza, the world heritage list was expanded in 1996.
