The building was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, along with other Palladian villas .

Interior

The villa is decorated with frescoes by Gualtiero Padovano (1512–1552), Giovanni Battista Zelotti and Battista del Moro (1518 to after 1568). The frescoes in the “Hall of the Muses” show poets and the muses in a utopian arcadia , framed by a painted architecture. Large caryatids in grisaille support a richly decorated entablature, in whose colored fields putti with books and musical instruments cavort. The poets and the nine muses cannot all be precisely defined, as only a few are endowed with attributes that allow precise identification.

The large fresco in the Sala dell'Olimpo shows the twelve gods of Olympus. In the Sala di Venere is u. a. the popular story of Venus and Mars, surprised by Vulcan in adultery and caught in a net, and the story of Dido and Aeneas. With one exception, the frescoes are attributed to Battista del Moro.

The small Sala delle Arti shows allegories of the arts as gilded figures in a painted arcade architecture, framed with trophies , musical instruments and putti. A blind window provides an illusionistic view of an idyllic landscape with Greek ruins.

Most of the halls are furnished with 17th century Murano glass chandeliers .

park

The villa originally had an Italian garden with trimmed bushes, bowl fountains and sculptures. The design of this garden dates from the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The former garden can now be seen in the remodeling as a park by Antonio Caregaro Negrin from 1852, which he carried out on behalf of the then owner Count Andrea Piovene. The park, lined with trees and criss-crossed by many paths, encloses a pond. A place of remembrance brings together memorial stones for former residents of the villa.

museum

The villa and park can be visited. An archaeological and natural history museum is set up in the villa, displaying fossil plants from the Oligocene that were found in the area in the 19th century.

Foraminifera , corals, snails, mussels, crustaceans, echinoderms and fish are on display in the natural history section of the museum .

The Villa Godi in the film

Luchino Visconti shot some scenes of his film Senso in the villa.

The villa served as the backdrop for the DVD "The Book of Madrigals" (released in 2014 by accentus music) by the Leipzig vocal ensemble Amarcord .
