The necropolis of Pantalica is one of the great necropolises in Sicily and contains more than 5000 chamber tombs dating from the late Sicilian Bronze Age and the early Iron Age . The necropolis belonged to the Pantalica settlement and gave its name to the Pantalica (north) culture .

In 2005 the UNESCO included the necropolis of Pantalica together with Syracuse under the name Syracuse and the rock necropolis of Pantalica in the world cultural heritage .

location

The necropolis of Pantalica is located in the Monti Iblei between the towns of Ferla and Sortino . The distance from Syracuse is about 35 km. In the Middle Ages, the high plateau between the rivers Anapo and Calcinara was also known as Pantegra, Pantarga, Buntariga or Panterica.

history

The size of the burial ground suggests a long use. The necropolis was founded in the 13th century BC. Chr. Until the 8th century. . Chr used. From the 8th century BC BC Sicily was settled by the Greeks . This started the city's decline. The place was inhabited, but it was no longer important until the Arab period. Nothing is left of the city, except for the remains of a building, the Royal Palace or Palazzo del Anaktoron.

The oldest chamber graves are around 1270 BC. The most recent around the 8th century BC. In early Christian times the tombs were partly used as apartments and converted into chapels.

construction

The burial chambers are located in the vicinity of the palace-like building, which is known as the Anaktoron . The anaktoron itself is around 1100 BC. Was built. It represents a building complex that is divided into seven right-angled rooms. One of these rooms may have been a foundry. It is the only building in the settlement from which remains have so far been discovered.

Found objects

The finds are grave goods such as ceramics, weapons and objects from the household of the city's residents. They are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Syracuse .

The visit is possible from Ferla and Sortino . The necropolis is difficult to reach by public transport . There are buses from Syracuse to the entrance points.

The Realmese necropolis is the second most important of its kind on the island.
