Anna Maria Bietti Sestieri

Anna Maria Bietti Sestieri (born December 7, 1942 ) is an Italian archaeologist whose research focus is on the prehistory of Italy , more precisely the metal ages.

life and work

Bietti Sestieri received the Laurea (roughly equivalent to the Bachelor ) in Etruscology after studying with Massimo Pallottino at the University of Rome from 1964 to 1966 . In the early 1970s, her research on the early history of Italy was funded by the award of two MacNamara grants. From 1974 she worked as an archaeological specialist in Italian prehistory for the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma and conducted important excavations during this time. From 1995 to 2003 she was Archaeological Superintendent of Abruzzo and from 2003 to 2009 President of the Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria . Since 2006 she has been Professor of European Early History at the Università del Salento in Lecce . She has now retired .

Bietti Sestieri has published around 150 publications on Italian prehistory and organized several large museum exhibitions. She gained a lot of fame by directing the excavations in the Iron Age necropolis of Osteria dell'Osa east of Rome. She has carried out numerous excavations in Italy, including intensive excavations at Osteria dell'Osa, Castiglione (in Latium ) and Fidenae , as well as excavations at Frattesina di Fratta Polesine and Specchia Artanisi near Ugento .

Awards

She was elected a Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America in 1993 . In 1996 she received the Europe Prize of the Prehistoric Society . In 2013 she was elected a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei .
