Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria

The Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria (IIPP) is an Italian institution dedicated to “pre-history” and “proto-history” based in Florence . It should be noted that in Italy the border between Preistoria and Protostoria is sometimes drawn at the transition from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age, but at the latest at the beginning of the Iron Age ; in Germany ranging prehistory and history, however, until the Roman occupation, the early history even down to Carolingian period. This means that the institute deals with Italian history up to the period after 2000 or 1000 BC. Chr.

The establishment was founded on October 30, 1954, with its seat in a former oblate convent located between Via Sant'Egidio and Via dell'Oriuolo. The main founders were Mario Bertolone , Giacomo Devoto , Silvio Ferri , Paolo Graziosi , Piero Leonardi , Carlo Maviglia , Massimo Pallottino , Ferrante Rittatore Vonwiller , Ezio Tongiorgi , Livio Trevisan , Francesco Zorzi . Conferences have been held annually since 1956. In 2015 the institute moved to Via della Pergola, 65 at the Soprintendenza Archeologia della Toscana .

There are two series of publications, namely Origines. Studi e materiali pubblicati a cura dell'IIPP and the Atti delle Riunioni Scientifiche . In addition, there is the journal Rivista di scienze preistoriche , the 66th volume of which was published in 2016.
