The Anapo with Ponte Diddino |
The Anapo is a river in Sicily . It rises in the Monti Iblei on Monte Lauro near Palazzolo Acreide , crosses the Syracuse Free Municipal Consortium and flows into the Ionian Sea in the large port of Syracuse .
In ancient times, Anapos , the river god, was associated with Kyane , the nymph of the Ciane spring .
The total length of the Anapo is 40 km. The lower course is passable for small boats.
Shortly before it flows into the sea, the Anapo joins the small river Ciane . The banks of the two rivers are the only places in Europe where wild papyrus bushes still grow.
Botanists assume that the plants are remnants of an earlier Mediterranean vegetation, as they are not identical to the papyrus grasses of Egypt. In order to preserve the existence, the bank areas were placed under strict nature protection.
